palooka two of the best am fights i saw in person both involved mccarrick...v richardson in abas and v ray oliveira..who went on to become a world class ltwelter before hatton stopped a faded version. richardson can always say he bt vernon forrest eh? was alan temple a bit before this lot?

Temple was a little after that bunch I remember; Richardson had some excellent scalps and there was no guessing who would win on the night; Adrian Stone stopped Richardson in a round and then outpointed McCarrick; Richardson outpointed McCarrick and a year later Darren stopped Stone in a round! They seemed to improve every season and the region had some fantastic lads, it was very competitive. When I gave it a bit of a go I read the Boxing News and Richardson was in there and he'd won 2 or 3 junior titles and had about 60 bouts, lost a handful and boxed for young England, the same age as me, he must have been a natural and started very young; Hall was the same - he went to a tourament in Finland and knocked all 3 opponents out in a round or 2 over a weekend! McCarrick was very powerful wasn't he? A strong left hand I remember.

Brilliant amateurs all of them (they must have hundreds of trophies stored around)

manno - what was it like to compete against someone like Hall? I can remember reading one of his opponents said he'd got brains in his feet, they got him out of trouble automatically.

Looking at Kaylors record the first time Gibbs refereed him he DQ'd Kaylor in the 9th against Tony Cerda. Anyone know the reason why?

Odd looking at his record that he only won 1 title fight out of the 6 he contested. Thought he had won more.

I noticed that Ian. Off topic, but I was looking at Mickey Cantwell's record the other day. I'm sure he's a canny bloke and was probably a ticket seller, but it's amazing how many opportunities he got, considering who he beat.

Wasn't Kaylor in the ICF?

Gibbs was a great - a truly great - referee of the heavies but he struggled with the smaller men because he was not very nimble; I remember he had another off night in a Charlie Magri fight with a slippery American (Mike Stuart).

i brought my first proper gloves off of mickey ,he worked in a lonsdale shop i think it was just before he went pro or at the start of it .i think cantwell got so many chances as there wasn't many light fly weights in europe then so got more chances than he would now .nice guy

I remember listening to it on the radio

Jesus I loved Errol, and Kaylor, calling him
a black bastard. No wonder it kicked off at the press conference, but thank God Mark apologised years later to Errol, God bless him. What a fantastic human being Errol Christie was.

You may call BS but watching the fight that clearly wasn't the case. One thing is for certain Tyson wouldn't have had TWO bites at Holyfield's ear.

You're quite right though it was without doubt the most cowardly act I can recall seeing in ANY sport. I just felt that a stronger referee may have held it together better. Mills Lane, in fairness, was a victim of his own unfounded reputation.

I'm far from a Tyson apologist but Holyfield was an expert with use of the head. It happened loads of times in the first fight and was happening in the second. Tyson lost the plot imo rather than being cowardly. I do think Tyson was a bully and cowardly fighter when the going got tough but I genuinely think Holyfields use of the head and getting away with it just made him lose the plot completely. He was actually having a very good third round.

without being overt there was definately a casual empire racism at Boxing News under Harry Mullan. The colour of a boxer's skin was always referred to and often in unnecessary ways.

If memory serves, he got the boot because he refused to wear a tie. I met him a week after he left SKY and he was a top fella.
