I never said that they did, this thread asked for opinions on it and I gave mine.

You'll hit a glass ceiling if you don't at least try the gyms a few times. If a top-class trainer turns around after a sparring session to ask you for your thoughts about the spar then you've got to quickly process it and give what can be a complicated answer in simple terms. I thought I knew a lot about pressure fighting, and was dismissive of it, but a few years spent watching Hatton spar and train for fights taught me a lot more and I went back to old fights with new eyes.

As you say, it doesn't make experts out of people automatically, some guys could visit a million gyms and have top-level access, but they fundamentally don't get it.

We're almost getting into Bunce territory here. "....call themselves writers, here's what you do go file 300 words for the Berkshire Gazette about an amateur show on a thursday night. That's graft. That's learning. Proper writers." Blah, blah, blah.

I think the fact is the majority of mainstream press boxing writers ended up there by default. Do many people think Ron Lewis, Gareth A Davies, Jeff Powell, Colin Hart and Pat Sheenan ever gave a toss about boxing before they were asked to cover it? Of course they didn't. Now because they have covered it for years they are experts. The one thing they clearly lack though is passion. They fell into it.

A lot of the youtube guys at least have the passion even if they don't have the access to the gyms. But like I said, some of them are actually more experienced than you think, I can think of a few that know the sport better than you'd think.

You make very valid points there, I cant deny that. Would you agree regarding some of boxing writers that work for national papers being rather clueless though? I've read a fair few articles from some of the guys out there *wont name names* who really dont seem to know what they're talking about and they've been around the sport and covering it for donkeys years! Quite shocking actually.

Everyone has access to at least one gym or gym visit, many just can’t be mithered and want the right to vent or voice opinions without putting the graft in. How many hundreds of pounds, or thousands when you throw in trips to NY and Germany, do you think I’ve put down and how many days of Annual Leave have I lost in gym visits? It’s the most accessible sport in the world. There’s no excuse.

As I said, the ones I've watched didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. If I want to learn something about boxing I'll go to the gym, check my emails, talk to someone, watch a fight or read something. I post on forums for enjoyment, and the blogs, for me, are just overly long forum posts, some of them ESB level. Why watch them when I can just come here to talk with fellow boxing fans? I tried them, it wasn't for me so I don't watch them and don't see any reason to start.

Not really, no — I've already said that my take is the opposite of filing articles for a local paper. And I don't defer to all the print guys. A security guard can spend his whole life working in a museum, but that doesn't automatically make him an art historian.

Can't argue with any of that really Terry. My reply wasn't really directed at you. I agree you learn from those visits to gyms etc. Boxing is definitely the most accessible sport out there. When can we expect your first video blog?

I'm just curious and wanted to get some feedback on them. I'm no boxing expert but I enjoy the sport immensely and I do train. I try to bring interviews in English from fighters, trainers, promoters at events in Germany because not many other people are. Maybe there's a good reason for that? DD
