Good shout....been watching a fair bit on Pinky recently and even in later years his jab was great. .Chuck1052 wrote:Pinklon Thomas had a very nice jab for which he hasn't been given enough credit.

Gilberto Roman had a fantastic jab

Good not excellent. Kenny Norton exposed that.
evrenb wrote:Well his jab was excellent. But I think his combinations were his signature.
Besides, I have found to print that name in any positive way, gets a certain contributor to hit the search button, and go off on a tangent with her rebuttal. So...it's a good idea to keep all things M.A. on the Q.T.

That's like saying Tyson exposed Larry's jab as Holmes could do jack with it in their fight (massacre)
No, the point is that he didn't have an excellent left jab because Norton showed Ali could be countered off the jab. Cooper showed it a couple of times too but his eyebrows sprung a leak before he could really do much about it. Ali did not throw it in a technically correct way and didn't protect his right side when throwing it. If a lesser mortal did it the way Ali did, the guy would get hammered. But Ali had so much talent, he could get away with it most of the time. Thus, his jab was "good," but not "excellent."
Louis had a problem with his jab early in his career (and it cost him against Schmeling), but Blackburn corrected it and he had a nearly perfect jab for the rest of his career.

A few more under the radar:
Luther Rawlings
Tommy Farr
Sugar Ramos
Harold Johnson
I think in terms of sheer devastating power in the jab no-one tops George Foreman. It was also pretty fast and snappy in his 70s prime.

An old-timer who reportedly had a terrific left jab was "Peerless" Jim Driscoll.

Buster Douglas had a good jab and against Tyson, it was AMAZING. Powerful, fast and rapid (Ok, I am being selective, but boy.....what a night and what a fighter for that one night
)

Bobby Czyz had a powerful jab
Ricardo Lopez was a classical boxer and every punch was textbook.

Going contemporary again, Carl Williams had a very solid jab.

Rapid fire speed is not something that should ever be associated with Cervantes.
