TBH when you mentioned Toney i was trying to to remember who beat him in PF
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
In recent years it has to be Lewis beating Hollyfield.
Calzaghe's victory over Jones means nothing to me. I give him some credit for Hopkins but lets face it he looked shit.
Khan beat a shop worn Barrera.
Hattons triumph of Tyszu is right up there. It may have been Tyszu's last fight, though he was anything but shot. Hatton was great that night, right at his very peak, one of the best performances I have seen in a British ring.

Kirk Laing for doing a proper number on Duran....before disappearing on the biggest bender of weed smoking, rum drinking and the finest nights of Brown Sugar a man could possibly hope for. Apologies to Kirkland if he actually did something entirely different and more wholesome like attend Bible classes, attaining a sociology degree and workng for a charity....but my strong suspicion is that you had some serious fun having clipped a legend's wings.
Equal joint place....the Leamington Licker for making sure that Sugar Ray Robinson's Grand Tour of Europe ended up without a belt in his luggage and on a distinctly low, sour note at Earls Court.

Ezzard Charles must be up there.

Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
The answer is Sugar Ray Robinson, unless folk are disputing that he was the best ever....
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
Turpin beating Ray Robinson is obviously number one. (p.s. Terry Downes also beat him).
And Laing beating Duran is joint 2nd in my humble opinion along with Freddie Welsh who beat Benny Leonard (a definite top ten all time), among others. Leonard may have been a better Lightweight than Duran but Duran was.... well Duran.
Other honourable mentions.
Jack 'Kid' Berg beat Tony Canzoneri who is a better all time great than Tyson.
He also beat Kid Chocolate, who is up there.
Ted "Kid" Lewis, who predated Berg, maybe did even better beating Jack Britton who was the Sugar Ray/Floyd Mayweather of the day.
Stracey beating Mantequilla IN HIS ADOPTED HOMETOWN has to be worth a mention.
Finbar beating Pedroza.
And Buchanan beating several great fighters while also being bollock punched to defeat by Duran is a worth mention.
I am sure there's more but I'm off to bed.

Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
It's a very frustrating thread as all the Brits beating all time greats were (shot all time greats). And all the Brits up against prime greats got destroyed !

Dick Richardson by DQ.handsofstone wrote:Who beat Charles :??Cholo_cws wrote:Ezzard Charles must be up there.
Didn't Emile Griffith lose to Alan Minter? If so he might be in the top ten.

James J Corbett
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
There is a couple more who had a bit of hype!! Talked about being p4p kings
Roman Martinez against Ricky Burns.. I remember everyone and there dog saying Ricky would get stopped soon by a future p4p great.
Jeff Lacy v Joe Calzaghe - I believe Joe wrecked him. Lacy is a great fighter just best by another
Not British but
Rigondeaux v Donaire - this was a super fight. 2 of the best p4p against each other I actually think this one was the biggest even bigger than Mayweather v De la Hoya. Both prime fighters not dodging just fighting the best

Lacy and Martinez? Are you winding us up? And Rigo-Donaire is completely irrelevant to this thread!daviddee wrote:There is a couple more who had a bit of hype!! Talked about being p4p kings

I'm actually not at the time a lot of people believed these were the next big superstars... I think that's relevant to the thread. As for Rigo it's not relevant to the thread but as a wider point it is.. But I will be sure to ask your opinion next time budmickey1975 wrote:Lacy and Martinez? Are you winding us up? It's embarrassing that anyone would mention Jeff Lacy. Why don't you just throw your hands up and say 'gents, I'm not equipped to participate in this thread.'
Turpin over Robinson.
Honeyghan over Curry, Buchanan over Laguna, Stracey over Napoles. Do we include McGuigan/Pedroza?
Laing beat a fat Duran. Minter beat an utterly ancient Griffith. Do we want to throw in Benn/Barkley?
Fitzsimmons and Lewis have somewhat dubious British claims.
Most the other names mentioned have been faded to totally shot; Tyson, Tszyu, Barrera, Jones Jr - OH PLEASE!

Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
Curry was unbeaten when Honeyghan beat him, had won his last 2 fights in 2 rounds each and was only 9 months from when he destroyed Mcrory to unify the title. Tysuzu was also a hot favourite against Hatton and certainly want shot.jessi wrote:It's a very frustrating thread as all the Brits beating all time greats were (shot all time greats). Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
Gerald McClellan probably deserves a mention here given he was the number one middleweight and universal P4P top ten when Benn fought him. Had first round KO wins over Julian Jackson and John Mugabi going into that fight.
Re: Who was the best fighter a Brit ever beat?
I don't disagree with that my point wasn't on thread it was more what if these 2 guys hadn't got beat where would they have ended up.. I think Tyson and Jones Jnr are all time greats.. So my first post is relevant to topic. My 2nd more to show that sometimes defeats derail fighters destined for the top.. Just cause opinions vary it doesn't make them wrong.. People on these forums always no best.. I'm 30 so my boxing history is maybe not so good as some of the old farts. My opinion is based on my era.Tuan_Jim wrote:It's embarrassing that anyone would mention Jeff Lacy.
