Corrupt/inept British referees finally a story in the media
Re: Corrupt/inept British referees finally a story in the media
Re: Corrupt/inept British referees finally a story in the media
Groves' reaction is completely understandable. Groves was treated like the opponent in the last fight. It was an inept stoppage and do not forget the persistent illegal blows that Froch did throughout the fight and never got a point taken off, but pretty much got carte blanche to do what he liked.
That said, I do not think bringing in a foreign referee is the answer, I would be more interested in having foreign judges as the scorecards at the time of the stoppage was a joke. If a British referee is appointed, they will know they have to be seen to be impartial and fair to both fighters, especially after the controversy of the first fight.

Re: Corrupt/inept British referees finally a story in the media
Sorry but that's a load of rubbish. If they have to go through up to 15 years of training to get the likes of Foster, Ian John Lewis and Terry O'Connor then something is seriously wrong. I think the board needs to have a re think as to how they train referee's as it's clearly not working. As far as I'm concerned not one British Referee should be going anywhere near a World title fight let alone one as big as thisboxfan3 wrote:George is out of order talking about our ref's and not wanting any of them refereeing this fight. The Board need to stay strong and not bow down to his request. They stood down on the Burns fight where no British Official was allowed to be a ref or judge for that fight last Saturday.
We have some of the best Ref's in the World, who go through the hardest route to become a star referee, taking up to 15 years at a time to make the top grade, nowhere else in the world do ref's going through this training.
Nowhere in the world do refs get as much work in the ring as in Britain, so when it comes to experience there is no one to match our officials. Yes the US have a couple of good Ref's, but everywhere else the standard is very poor.
This fight to bring some respect back to our British officials needs to be all British Ref and Judges, it’s in our own back yard let’s use the best we have. Can you imagine the yanks not using American officials on a big fight in New York with two of their top boys I don't think so, so why should be give in to this request.
If it happens some of the British officials will think why do I bother if my own board don't back us, we have the best in the world, OK the last time maybe it was stoppeed a bit early but who knows. Look at Frouch v Bute the American ref there was so bad stopped the fight, Eddie Hearn in the ring, then decides to count, so no they are no better than our guys in fact worce.
Lets get our best 4 guys out as ref and judges and show the world how good we are.
Groves has every right to complain as due to Foster's ineptness he lost the biggest fight of his career. If I were him I'd also be demanding non British refs and judges for the biggest fight of my career. Considering also the load of rubbish being spouted by Robert Smith directly after the fight. It doesn't exactly fill you with confidence about their ability to their job properly
Re: Corrupt/inept British referees finally a story in the media
I don't care who referees or judges the fight, the only thing I would want is the IBF, WBA and BBBofC not to name them until right before the fight, put them up in hotels with the bills to be paid through them by Matchroom later and keep them away from all outside influence in the week of the fight, watching and reading stuff about the fight's fine, just keep them away from anyone involved with the fight.

I think Groves needs to be careful of what he wishes for, a referee that wont stop a fight could not only end his career but also his life. Very dangerous all this.

Re: Corrupt/inept British referees finally a story in the media
I like Groves and think he'll win conclusively this time round, I would hope this story about British officials isn't deadly serious on his part. His fight with DeGale was a very close call and none of the three British judges went against him (two had it for him, the third went for a draw). The judges disagreed on six of the rounds. I don't remember George moaning about that at the time.
There is a valid point about the scorecards when Froch faced Groves, as two judges only had George in front by a round which seems strange.

Horse
A quick google search of the worst stoppages by referees should tell you what you need to know.
You are a keyboard warrior after all.
Whether you like it or not as many people were happy with the stoppage in the Groves Froch fight as we're unhappy.
In fact if you take a straw poll within the industry you'd clearly be shocked.

There were 2 other fathers at my sons wrestling club that were on about the rematch and both said that it was stopped too soon, not scientific I know.

I don't care about people in the industry, the general public generally think the stoppage was farcical and they're correct.Parson Cross wrote:Whether you like it or not as many people were happy with the stoppage in the Groves Froch fight as we're unhappy.

Seen refs turning a blind eye to low punches and head bellow belt height in many haskins and Jamie McDonnell fights always in home arenas.palooka wrote:By 'home' fighter I meant the boxer under the promotional banner that is 'hosting' the bout, I've seen bouts where the referee is clearly partial to one fighter over another and more often than not they are the 'home' boxer.
I can appreciate that we have some British refs that are among the best around but this bout has to have an element of impartiality and if a foreign ref does that then all well and good.
(The recent bout with Gavin Macdonnell and Leigh Wood was a cracking bout, the judges weren't needed and Gavin is from Doncaster as were 2 of the judges - that shouldn't happen).
Re: Corrupt/inept British referees finally a story in the media
I do think there is an issue around referees and home bias. It has been proven that football referees favour home and big teams-not through corruption-just through psychology-and this happens in both pro and amateur boxing. It does need addressing and recognising.
I have watched the groves/froch fight ending again and again, and I do have no doubt that Groves was seconds away from being blasted out, his head was down and he was stumbling forward, but you could argue the home crowd played a big part in keeping Froch in the fight in the first knockdown (if that had been at wembley?) and I think the home crowd played a part in the stoppage.
I think it is naive to say all our British refs are fantistic-some are, some arent and some have off nights.

Yes, British refs and judges have proved themselves poor/inadequate in recent years and although I jUdge the groves stoppage as, let's say sh1t, it's was not THAT SH1T (you can/can't understand why all in the same breathe). People say our judging is the worst at the same time completely forgetting GERMAMY, CJ Ross and other ridiculous American officiating
