Depends what you mean by 'well rounded' I suppose, to me it would include being able to do a bit of everything as required, and adapt if needed. Armstrong was a fighting machine in his particular style, but I can't imagine boxing on the back foot if he had to.

Guys like Robinson, Charles, Duran are greats partly because their well rounded styles made them able to adapt to whatever was in front of them. Guys like Armstrong and Pep are greats because they did a particular part of the game to perfection.

Chavez Snr at superfeather and lightweight had some fantastic victories over very good men; he achieved them by boxing, fighting, brawling and punching - he could mix the strategies up within a fight and think on his feet. Julio Cesar Chavez Snr was a very complete fighter.

Of the modern fighters, Sugar Ray Robinson. Ruben Olivares would be my runner-up.

From the old-timers, I'd say Joe Gans, George Dixon or Tommy Ryan.

Add Ernesto "Nato" Marcel to the complete fighters list. He had it all. Also the great Aaron Pryor and Meldrick Taylor were complete fighters.

Meldrick Taylor was just incredibly fast, coordinated, fit and strong and game as hell. He wasn't a complete boxer though physically he was the complete package; his skill set and boxing brain just does not compare to some of the others mentioned though he was brilliant to watch.

Again with Meldrick "Defensive Wizard" Taylor.

If you combined Taylor and Pryor you wouldn't have a complete fighter.

This guy talks about Ray Robinson's inability to block punches and lists two guys that blocked shots with their face. Two of my favorite fighters, terrible answers for the thread.

I knew it was coming from page one. Terrible.

In his prime he was awesome. Not as complete as Meldrick Taylor or Andre Berto but still pretty good.

Marvin had excellent footwork and also slipped punches very well when he wasn't in all out attack mode. He had great judgment of distance and timing.[/quote]

On a serious note, Eder Jofre deserves a mention. His battle with Jose Medel is on YouTube. He was very highly thought of in his day and his comeback from retirement was incredible.

It's easy to forget others when discussing that kind of once in a generation talent, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Ray Mancini. I wasn't a big fan during his day, but man what a complete fighter. His defense was splendid.

Same here. Gatti was such a cagey fighter, EXCEPT when he had to leave himself open when throwing wild bombs while hanging his chin out. That's the thing with power punchers like him and Taylor. KO artists tend to cloud our view.

Azumah Nelson could adapt and fight in many different styles.

he was a very versatile fighter and though I'll be shot down for mentioning him; Orlando Canizales could do an awful lot in the boxing ring, he wasn't THE most complete but he was exceptional in his division.

I really liked both Orlando and Azumah. The professor was superb in his prime. Whitaker made him look a bit one dimensional though that's something he did to a lot of excellent fighters.
