. Very interesting read, to turn pro as late as what he did and with no amateur background to then win his French national title, European and ibo world title is a amazing achievement, it gets over looked what he did in his career, can u imagine a British fighter turning pro at 31 with no amateur pedigree, losing his first 4 fights then going in to win a British title, a ibo world title and the European title, he would be a British ring legend and would be known to alot of boxing fans round the world, I find afiff is overlooked and forgot about, I never hear him mentioned in boxing news, boxing monthly or ring magazines neither, shame great fight and looks to have a very interesting storyOld bones Ian wrote:Djelti was a very fit boxer, strong and lean with a decent punch. He learnt on the job, as going pro with no amateur experience and aged 31 would do that. Sink or swim and for the first few fights he sunk. After being DQ'd in his first few fights he could of walked away, but stuck with it, and gradually got better, being matched with journeymen who he beat, and better boxers who he lost to, such as Lorcy and Lifa.
He kept plugging away and put in decent showings against Barrios, Jones and Dunne. Losing those on points but showing a toughness to keep going.
This was why he was brought over to fight Charles Shepherd, most thought that Djelti would put up a tough display but ultimatly lose against the hometown boxer Shepherd, who was on a roll having beaten a fading Tom Johnson in his previous fight. But Djelti didn't read the script and after a rough couple of rounds, including taking a count in the first he slowly took over taking Shepherd out in the 6th round.
Next up from this country was Ian Mcleod, who put in a brave performance in lasting the distance, but he was well beat by the left hand of Djelti, the jab making a mess of the Scotmans face.
Alex Moon gave it a try, but he was floored twice before being counted out in the 6th, the left hook again doing the damage.
After that Djelti moved on to win the EBU title, but for me he never quite looked the same when wearing that belt, winning it away from home in Spain is a very good result, but his subsequent defences against Oudji and Djibaba were a bit lack lustre. Age seemed to be catching up with him.

He accepted me as a friend on fb in a heartbeat which suggests a humble guy.but than he didn't answer a couple of posts or happy birthday messages,I don't think affif speaks even elementary English but what a terrific career he started so very late and in his 40s seemed lightning quick and busted up some very good British competition who had the lengthy amateur careers affif didntMichael bennt wrote:Wanted to buy his book but it's only in French, was a big fan of his back in the day, would just like to hear other boxing posters thoughts on this fighter and any interesting facts about him, as from the little information I have read he seems to have had a very strange and interesting boxing career. Thanks

Re: Afiff djelti
I was sat with Sheps girlfriend and family for the fight and I remember slinking down in my seat as it became clear Djelti was too good for him and the writing was on the wall. I can still hear her howl in my mind when Charles hit the floor. Very different to the Johnson fight when we all piled into a local restaurant to celebrate and I got a picture, pissed, with Shep and the belt.

Affif Djelti was very underrated and seems to be forgotten
I think Affif boxing story is incredible, to turn pro with no amateur background at age 31 and then lose your first four fights by stoppage then to turn it all around and find your form and prime yeas age 41 and become European champion and then ibo world champion is a pretty amazing thing to do, yet I never hear no mention of him by fans, magazines or journalist. I have read up as much as I can on him but there isn't much out there and not many of his fights are available

I was being daft - the thread (before it was merged) said people have forgotten how good it was, hence my silly quip, which looks considerably less amusing now the threads have been merged.... I recall Affif well, I think he was usually the underdog when he came over, and he kept beating our fighters. He was really under-rated, he was brought over to lose to Pithie and Shepherd and I remember those fights really well. Shepherd's time in the spotlight was terrific, he was a tremendous fighter and I was in shock when Djelti beat him.
