I thought Stevie Bell was spot on when he says Gavin waits too long for the perfect shot and it can be quite boring to watch but i do think the better the opponent, the better the performance Frankie will produce

Frankie does look quite fleshy downstairs though, with his style it doesnt seem to affect him though
Shikukutu was the sort of fighter that could give a lot of people problems, purely because he's so wild, he'd swing 2 or 3 big punches at the head, miss, then quickly reset himself and start swinging again, add that in to a desire to trade at every opportunity made him very awkward. I do agree though that Frankie waits too long to get the punches off, the first 90 seconds of the fight Shikukutu missed with every punch, Gavin threw a couple of jabs in response, he makes fighters miss with ease, but at times he doesn't get the counters off, which is what should really put them off coming forward again.

I have always said Frankie should be a welterweight, but looking at him last night, maybe he can get down to light welter. He's never going to look like an Adonis, but he woke up on Friday 10st 6lbs 3oz, had some breakfast, taking him up to 10st 7lbs, if he can do welterweight that easily, can he get the extra 7 pounds off, he could certainly get another 2 or 3 pounds off if he doesn't have to train on the day of the weigh in and the rest could surely come off during the training camp. He made 10st for the fight against Michael Kelly for the Irish title, maybe that put him off light welterweight, but that was done while he wasn't eating right and in the lead up to all the problems he had a few months later. Now he's settled and eating the right foods at the right times, surely he could do it again. Another way of looking at it is that he was a lightweight as an amateur and Bradley Saunders was a light welterweight, but as a pro Frankie's fighting a weight above him and last night Saunders certainly looked the bigger man of the two.

Gavin beats Bundu. I agree that he looks like he could make light welter. There are some strong guys at Welter.

I dont find him boring to Watch at all. His ability to create distance is top drawer.

He creates distance brilliantly, but he needs to use it to get punches of his own off.

I can take that point and I also admire people who box in their natural division, not draining and starving themselves to boil down. I think it shows a lot of confidence in boxing ability; they are not trying to'steal' a physical advantage by being bigger than their opponent.

I think the fact the guy he faced on Saturday was a very strong lightweight showed Gavin can't really use strength to stamp authority as he was the much bigger man. It was a clash of styles he prob came away from feeling dejected but it's great prep for bundu a quality operator Gavin can impress against & work his way up. I do agree with a lot of the points made on here & I don't think this is the year Gavin should attempt a crack at world honours I think it's too soon for him although I think he's catching brook up & he could end the year with his scalp! & head into the new year raising his profile & targeting big fights while gaining valuable expieriance

Brook should be at light middle. Whenever you watch a Brook fight, he looks huge compared to his opponent.

I weren't really posting with Brook in mind though he does seem to fit the bill. When I was 'learning' about boxing I was intrigued by the thought of skill and nounce overcoming physical advantages. The sport seems to have turned toward making fit and powerful athletes that hold a notable size advantage over their opponent.

Turning athletes into boxers, rather than boxers into athletes. But, I will always say a good boxer beats a good brawler, size, strength and physicality will only take you so far. Look at the fighters seen as the best of all time, Robinson, Leonard, Greb, Pep etc and even those who have been at the top of the tree in the last couple of decades, in general they're all slick, well schooled boxers that avoid taking punishment.

Personally I think he takes Bundu apart.

i mostly agree, all I'd add is sometimes people forget how much it can take out of a man's stamina when his opponent is continually slipping shots. if only i was good enough i'd happily stay in range slipping shots and doing not much more for the first 90 seconds of any round, the second half of the round would always be mine after that, I would feel

He needs to start waking the walk. He's boring, he doesn't put any pizazz into it and goes through the motions. He doesn't deserve a world title shot.

No. Apparently neither him or Kell could care less, depending on who you listen to on here.

Bundu looks to be pretty good at slipping and ducking; it'll be a really good bout, Bundu has a few early wins on his record - it's no formality.

He's not 29 till September. Brook isnt that much younger than Frankie even though he's been a pro since 2004.

Must be even worse though when you're being made to miss wildly and taking clean punches back, draining physically and mentally it's got to be incredibly demoralising, almost feeling powerless.

totally. there are few things more demoralising than continually throwing and missing (being made to miss more to the point) and made to pay. not only the energy you're wasting but like you say the powerless feeling of missing shots. if a bloke just guards up in front of you at least you've got someone holding you up when you punch evfen if you're not landing cleanly, at least you score like quarter-points knocking his gloves into his face, at least you feel like you're doing something worthwhile. i have one sparring partner whose speed I can time well enough I can slip him almost at will maybe 80-85% of the time, and I can see the frustration building. then he gets impatient and starts lunging and I pick him off, its a fvcking brilliant feeling. if I'm parrying his shots instead, he's still frustrated but doesn't get wild looking for opportunities.

speaking of frustration i love that story Bellew told on here, some Turkish ama got so frustrated cos he couldn't hit Gavin with a bag of rice, ended up headbutting the ref as it was the only thing in the ring he could touch. or something like that.

Frankie's talent for staying and range and slipping shots is almost uncoachable IMO.

I go with gavin getting down to light welter if he really wants to make a mark. but to be honest I think its too late at nearly 29. I like his uncanny sense of where to be in the ring though

He's not 29 till the end of september. To put it into context. Degale is 29 next february.
