Nelson gets some undue stick IMO. Unlike Smith he's walked the walk.
His autobiography is quite a good read also. Quite humble and honest about his abilities and achievements & quite funny in parts, expecially the open day at the Ingle gym after his big defeat in Sheffield. Brendan app got sick of the abuse & johnny feeling sorry for himself and invited anyone to come to the gym who thought Johnny was crap, offering a cash reward if they could knock Nelson out in two rounds. Apparently the queue of local wananbees, bouncers etc was massive & johnny was not best pleased! :yay:

I'd laugh if Nelson turned round and floored Adam one day, after being the butt of one too many of his jokes. :box:
It shows a confident person if they are able to laugh things off.

His fight was a draw, not a defeat. The offer was so much per round as a sparring partner. As far as I can remember only 2 people took up the offer - one had never boxed before - his wife sent him down because they needed a new settee! Neither lasted a round!

Say what you like about johnnys style but he was champ for a long time often going on the road to defend his belt and for a little weazel like smith to sit there mocking him is bang out of order imo.

For what it's worth i reckon johnny would have stopped enzo if they had fought, maybe then he'd have got more credit.
Well said totally agree

No why?

It's not the type of thing you should accuse someone of either unless you have evidence.

Watching them do an interview is so cringe worthy the way they try put words into people's mouths
Also the way they refer to any 1who holds a belt big or small a king for example calling some 1 the commonwealth king or the southern area king and the way that smith keeps saying "our sport" I bet he didn't get his bent nose in the ring

Though there are sometimes interesting items on it and I enjoy seeing the ghost of Kenneth Williams live on in some of Adam's expressions, I do find it difficult to relate to both this show and Bunce's Boxing Hour. Both seem of a very lightweight, cheerleadery style. Much of the boxing industry seems so closely knit that there is no proper critique of boxing/boxers/referees etc on these shows presumably for fear of upsetting somebody or actually putting a boxer's achievement into some sort of context. So (and as Dubliner said) everybody with an alphabet title (regular/interim or whatever) is the champion of the world and "ruling the division." They have virtually nothing to say about the alphabet boys and the huge impact they have had on boxing. That would be too serious a subject I guess. I suspect I need to lower my expectations and not see them as being anything more than PR/boxing chat show programmes but as I said they don't do much for me.

That "our sport" thing is so annoying. Almost as when people say 'a proper boxing man'.

Interested to know whats your definition/understanding of a "boxing man".

Sounds absurd but I wouldn't call Joe Calazaghe a 'boxing man' - he has little to no interest in the sport. Probably couldn't tell you 5 current world champions, yet he is one of our greatest ever fighters.

On the other hand Bob Mee is routinely regarded as the most knowledgeable man in boxing in the UK despite looking like a librarian. You'd imagine he'd run away the second a gym door opened. Obviously thats not the case, and I have a lot of respect for Mee. I guess he would be classed as a 'boxing man'.

Interesting thread.

I really like Nelson and I think he is a decent presenter, and I also think Smith is fine at what he does although you could argue he lacks personality.

However whenever I watch Ringside, which isn’t every week, I always think it doesn’t know what it is.

An hour a week isn’t long enough on certain weeks to cover all the news, especially if it is sandwiched between two big weekends of fights as there just isn’t enough time in an hour to both review and preview the weekend’s action.

It's a tough one as I don’t think it could survive as a two hour show but I can’t see them supporting two one hour shows.

I think if Sky wants to push boxing forward it does need to increase its coverage all year round, instead of just hyping it up for the odd box office fight (Froch Groves for example).

I would love to see Sky revamp their boxing coverage and maybe have one show that is purely just serious discussion, and then another that is a bit more of a magazine style.

They have the personnel, I think Andy Scott is fine at what he does and I am a big fan of Ed Robinson.

You kind of take it as given that fighters know about the actual fighting side of it, even if they don’t follow boxing. The term tends to be used about the people outside the ring or in other areas. You get geeks, who know loads of stats but their understanding isn’t the greatest, and you get guys who don’t slavishly learn every little stat yet you could drop them from a plane mid-round and they’ll pick up what’s going on almost instantly due to an innate understanding of boxing itself. It’s all about knowing what you’re looking at and reading fights, there’s loads of people who can’t do this, even people at a decent level. Bob Mee’s a good example of someone who’d be introduced with the “boxing man” tag. It’s also about understanding the sport. If two people of a similar ilk hook up then they tend to recognise one another.

It’s also a shorthand way of letting someone know it won’t be a frustrating conversation or a game of ‘You show me your stats, I’ll show you my BoxRec ABC logic’. I knew a guy who’d ask you if a person was a “boxing man” just to know what he was going into, especially if it was an interview situation, as he didn’t want the other person’s lack of understanding to spill over to the point where it made the interviewee look bad.

Then there’s the gofers, who know very little but think they know it all. You also get three-step trainers/fight figures. Step One: They’ve just popped their head around the gym door and ask if they can watch a session. Step Two: They’re at the side of the ring passing you the water. Step Three: You walk into the gym one day and they’re either training, managing or doing other work for your fighter. No nothing berks, basically.

Then you get the people who see it as a shortcut to minor celebrity or easy dough. They sit there watching fights, but aren’t taking anything in. We’ve also got the guys you see on other forums who are just into it for the TV and promotional arguments, I always think they’d be on Hi-Fi forums arguing brands if they hadn’t stumbled across boxing. I’ve seen guys on Twitter arguing about networks etc. during an actual fight, and a decent fight at that. They’re an oddity.

You basically sometimes have to be able to say: “This guy’s a clown” without actually saying it, or say they’re alright, so “boxing man” slips into the mix in this instance.
It made me feel better to spot a grammatical mistake.
