Think the definition of a journeyman is getting a bit blurred here a lot of the guys getting mentioned are just boxers who just happened to have lost a lot of fights, I think this way of thinking occurs a lot with fans that have no personal fight experience.

I think most posters have a good idea of what a journeyman is, thanks. The thread has simply moved on and expanded a bit.

Couple of names that won world titles here Tyrone Booze and Jeff Lampkin.

Booze was 15-10 when he was brought over to contest the vacant WBO title against Derek Angol. The British boxer was the unbeaten guy expected to roll over Booze, the problem was Booze had fought and given a tough time to these guys Holyfield (excellent fight), Eddie Mustafa Muhammad , Bert Cooper, Henry Tillman and Dwight Muhammad Qawi just to name a few.

Angol came out like a rocket ship, and threw an insane amount of punches, there was no way he could keep it up for 12 rounds. Booze had only lost 1 fight by stoppage in the last 10 years to heavyweight Du Plooy, so Angols punches just kind of bounced off him. It got to the 7th round and a knackered Angol could barely stand and was overwhelmed by Booze.

Jeff Lampkin was once a good prospect , but a series of losses in mid careers had pushed him to dangerous journeyman status. He managed to get a couple of decent wins and a fight against Glenn McCory was signed, a weight weakened McCory was no match for Jeff and a body shot earned the American the IBF world title in the 3rd.

Not sure he turned into a contender, but Ryan Clark had a nice turn around in 2012 with two stoppage wins over Jonjo Finnegan and a first round win over Jamie Boness. He had stopped taking fights short notice and came with ambition.

He then challeneged Martin Concepcion for the Midland belt in 2013 but Concepcion was class that night and stopped him in the seventh round.

Mike Weaver. (6-6 says boxrec after 12 fights.)

Verno Phillips lost 4 of his first 12, although all of them were to unbeaten fighters.
Sam Solimon lost quite a few in his early career as well.

Sugar Gibiliru briefly held the British title during the Super Featherweight merry-go-round of the early 90s

this is a decent turn around lost first 5 as a pro, then won next five and is welsh light middle champion

Not sure if we can class female boxing but Renata Szebeledi (http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer) lost her first 5 and later won a world title. She has fought just 9 of 26 bouts at home.

He is Matt, I remember him, he learnt on the job and really came into his own - he was really well regarded and did very well. I'm glad you reminded me of him, I wonder how he's getting on now? Hope he's doing OK.

Does anyone remember a nutter called Buck Smith-came over and upset Kirkland Laing? I think could have been a contender with the right training and backing but I think he was the kind of guy that kept in shape by fighting, and took anything going. A few shillings short if I remember rightly which maybe didnt help?

Buck did a lot of his fighting in states without Athletic commissions if my memory serves me? Resulted in him fighting his manager, fighting other gym mates under false names etc etc.

Agreed he could have made a decent fringe contender with the right promoter/management.

His record as it stands is suspect, however.

His fight with dean Phillips was a cracker I had it on VHS haha, very tough fighter was Judson, great to watch too

I would of always liked to of seen the Manchester derby foster vs Bingham, there was always loads of talk about it getting made but nothing ever come of it
