Liverpool has a great amateur boxing tradition and is probably only second to London in that regard, as for the pro's - not really, I would have half a dozen British cities above Liverpool regards pro boxing pedigree.

London is so much bigger though, you'd probably have to break London down into N/S/E/W. East London would have to have a good shout, wouldn't it?

Yeah, no bias from me there. They'd have to be right up there for Champions, Pro and Amateur.

it's hard to nail someone down to a part of london as you can move 5 miles away and be in a different part .

Couple of hundred yards between being a South Londoner and an East or West Londoner.

where I live is not the home of music, art or football. it is not the heart of academia or cinema or theatre.

but I'm very smug about my manor being the real home of boxing...east London of course. there really is no argument about it :TU:

Is it? Why?

They keep saying York Hall is and I have no idea why that is the home of British boxing? Someone is going to tell me one day other than Adam Smith. :witzend:

The York Hall is a dump. And how many Repton guys aren't even from East London? Quite a few seem to just train there.

No more have come out of East London than Manchester or Glasgow - how many world champions have come out of East London? Lennox Lewis learned his boxing in Canada, top of my head the last world champion from East London with a legit world title is Charlie Magri, before him was it John H. Stracey?

York Hall seems to be a fairly recent boxing venue Mick, Henry Cooper never fought there for example but according to sky - it is the 'home of boxing'.

I think it's a hangover from the past - the 70's, 80's, 90's; the amateur gyms in East London (Repton, West Ham) tended to win a stack of amateur titles every season and the finals were held at York Hall. I think Henry Coopers golden gloves were held there as well. There was also a gym above The Old Oak pub in Canning Town where Terry Lawless used to train many of the top prospects and national champions; they also tended to box at York Hall regularly. Any boxing on SKY in the early/mid 90's in London seemed to come from York Hall whereas if boxing was on in other areas of the country it was in leasure centres.

That's my take on it though I may be wrong :TU:

As I said, a lot of Reptons champs are made elsewhere as were those at The Royal Oak. Most leisure centres are bigger and certainly in better condition than The York Hall.

I get what you mean Mickey and the people who make round trips of 70 and 80 miles to Repton do so for a reason, whether it is the famous name of the gym I don't know. I always imagined that some talented boxers from Essex and further afield went there for the sparring and as sort of a 'finishing school'.

I also believe you about the state of York Hall and the better facilities at leasure centres; boxing used to be a bit grimey and basic though (I think I preferred it like that).

sticking with the york hall i've seen some crap boxing there as well as some great fights but it's not like say the royal albert hall that place was brilliant to watch fights at such a great atmosphere . the york hall is more for your 8 rounders than world class boxing

Repton were famed for "nicking" fighters when I was younger. More than just a few from my area learnt their trade at local clubs before being "seduced" and travelling to be a Repton fighter.

Wasn't always the best move. Repton has that reputation though, quite a few want to wear the vest.

home of boxing? quite apart from east london's other claims to the title ie the sheer number of quality of professional and amateur boxers from this area over the last 200 years, the Pugilistic club (a precursor of the board of control) held its first meeting and dinner at "the Thatched House" public house in Leytonstone, east London in 1814.:salut:
