Re: Anthony Joshua vs Matt Legg

I was hoping someone like john Mcdermott would get the call. maybe next time.
He's pulled out of more fights of late than I care to remember. Someone of his standard would have been about right tho, and Legg is definitely not that.Glass Joe wrote:I was hoping someone like john Mcdermott would get the call. maybe next time.
Atleast you're honest about it mate. I know you're a fan of Eddie and matchroom and so on so you could of stuck to your guns on that.jameswilson wrote:He's pulled out of more fights of late than I care to remember. I think you're at times unfair on Matchroom and obviously we've banged heads on that point. The guys coming back off of injuries or defeats, or who are just marking time before a WT shot or an eliminator should be excused gimme fights, and I don't (or try not to) whinge about Frank or Micks gimme opponents when his fighters are in similar situations.columbo wrote:Atleast you're honest about it mate. Amazing that you now have the no1 and no2 most idiotic sentences ever on boxrec, one after the other.Broomhall wrote:I know what you are saying but everyone should have at least a 10% chance of winning. Na you're right. I am a little unfair at times. To be honest i'm not that keen on promoters generally because as a boxing fan I just want to see the best fights and that it's in conflict to a large degree with a promoters interests so I guess it's natural really lol. I just wish there was a way that boxing could be restructured so that promoters and fighters were rewarded more for taking the tough tests in a way that would encourage the best fighting the best. Impossible in reality most likely but a man can dream.jameswilson wrote:I think you're at times unfair on Matchroom and obviously we've banged heads on that point. This is pretty poor tho because Joshua hasn't been out with a long term injury, and they've had ages to bring someone in. This is the kinda guy usually brought in at 2 weeks notice if someone pulls out. The only excuse for this is if indeed someone of the standard of Jason Gavern was booked but pulled out a few days ago leaving no decent opponents willing to take the fight at 14 days notice.
Do you really think it will ramp up sales though?tony1234 wrote:Apparantly the Joshua fight is on Sky Sports 1 as a taster and to ramp up sales for the PPV so it will be on early and over early too.
Followed swiftly by the third.jameswilson wrote:Amazing that you now have the no1 and no2 most idiotic sentences ever on boxrec, one after the other.Broomhall wrote:I know what you are saying but everyone should have at least a 10% chance of winning. The British "fight public" are knowledgable but they will be a tiny minority within the crowd at Froch/Groves.Broomhall wrote:Can anyone be excused for taking or promoting gimmes? regardless of situation it is a rip off to the public and ultimately does the fighter no good at all. Paul Smiths recent "bout" an example, pointless and wont help him at all when it comes to fighting Abraham-better off with some tough sparring.
Time and again guys who get gimmes come unstuck when they meet someone who can fight. I know what you are saying but everyone should have at least a 10% chance of winning. The only way Joshua loses this is if he trips up on the steps into the ring and knocks himself out.
The British fight public are a knowledgeable bunch and all his will do is alienate them from a young man who has real potential.

The money comes from these know eff all types. Look at how much Hatton made off the back of the 'average man' going to support him. He had a long run of questionable opponents before he stepped up to face Tszyu yet it was sell out after sell out. They go so they can say they were there most of the time, as opposed to actually enjoying and appreciating the skill and courage on show.
'That Joshua fella is quality mate, see how he took that other blokes head off his shoulders, gonna be world champ'
I can hear it now...
Money talks. They were probably offering chump change.milpool wrote:Big fan of Joshua but I'm disappointed with this opponent. I appreciate he's only a 5 fight novice but Matt Legg is probably the worst of his opponents so far. I'm only assuming they were struggling to find anyone suitable...
There is such a thing as indefensible. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I tried defending that opponent.columbo wrote:Atleast you're honest about it mate. There are about 400 heavyweights more suitable than Legg. They could have easily got someone better than this and not had to shell out too much either.milpool wrote:Big fan of Joshua but I'm disappointed with this opponent. The potential audience at home is large. Folk won't be missing Big Josh. Why put him on first though?jameswilson wrote:I doubt there will be more than 4,000 people in that long before the main event.Riddick Blowe wrote:I'm a big Joshua fan but this guy sure does look like a scrub.
Anyway, a quick, lethal 1-round KO in front of a hell of a lot of people isn't going to hurt him.
The chances of that happening next year are zero. If they want to build his profile I think they should look at a domestic showdown with Hughie Fury at the end of this year (which I'd expect him to win fairly easily) and then maybe a fight with the loser of Fury v Chisora or with Price in about 9-12 months time.
