I can't believe anybody with any knowledge of boxing would deny Leonard greatness. I don't particularly like the person but he is the most complete fighter I have ever seen and his accomplishments over a relatively short career are amazing.

I dont think I have disliked many fighters. I have disliked some of the way some fighters have treated each other. I felt Wilfred Benitez could be very disrespectful to his oppononts like when he K,Od Maurice Hope. When Hamed chinned Steve Robinson I thought his behaviour in the ring was pretty tasteless. I didnt like the way Ali got away with some very cruel things he said about Joe Frazier and some of his other opponents.

Even now I hate to see a fighter stand over someone they have just knocked over. I remember Hamed fighting and then you would see lots of young kids at amateur shows copying the staring and the showboating and you could see how this behaviour spreads down the game.

You're entitled to your opinion but you are grossly in the minority. An olympic gold medalist who goes on to beat Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler shouldn't be seen as anything less than great.

Good amateur career.1st half of his pro career was good and he was never knocked down. After the detached retina,he was knocked down once by clubfighter Kevin Howard,A very disputable decision win against Hagler. He was knocked down by an average Donny Lalonde en route to a tko win.He was knocked down twice against a fading Hearns(how they called that a draw was a travesty,he cleary got his but kicked!).He was knocked down twice by an average Terry Norris en route to another butt kicking loss.Last but not least he got knocked down and stopped by a very light hitting Hector Camacho. There was a good part of his thousand comebacks though and that was a great decision win against 103 year old Roberto Duran......NOT!Good yes, great hardly!

I never said I hated anyone.I did not care for Minter's racist comments about Hagler, saying something like,"Ain't no black man gonna' take my title"!Monzon was a habitual woman beater and a murderer and so was Valero.

Anyone who includes his defeats to Camacho and Norris is laughable. He was long shot and done by then.. He was further past his prime against Hearns than Tommy was and contrary to what you said, it was still a close fight even though Tommy deserved the nod. He had fought once in five years and was making his middle weight debut against Hagler yet got the win... His third fight with Duran was within the same calendar year that Duran bested Iran Barkley....... Leonard was great...

Why isn't Bernard Hopkins on that list then? He said he'd never lose to a white boy, just like Minter said a black man wouldn't take his title.

Nobody hates Leonard more than I, but he was far from overrated. One of the 25 or so greatest fighters in history.
It's hard to disagree.the Benitez and hearns wins alone very very special .the Duran rematch and hagler fight icing on an already splendid cake.although the hagler fight I had a draw

I'm guessing the laughing emoticon means that you think Hearns was more past it even though he had been far more active in recent years, was the slightly younger of the two, clearly better suited for fighting above 160, and would chalk up a win over Virgil Hill a full two years later.. OK...

The only reason hearns got the fight is because he was widely thought to be finished. It's the same nonsense people try to pull with Tyson/Holyfield. they were both past their best, Hearns just happens to be a stylistic nightmare for Leonard at any point in their careers. Particularly over 12 rounds.

I hated Leonard when I was a kid because I was such a big Hearns fan, but anyone saying he wasn't great has never seen him fight. He was the best p4p in my lifetime I think. I never have really seen anyone quite like him.

I get the Broner thing I don't know of any fighter that has ever annoyed me as much.

Golota was annoying too, don't think I hated him, but I get it.

It's funny seems much harder to hate boxers than it does athletes from other sports. In their own way they have a sort of dignity that isn't always matched by guys in the big team sports.

I think we should forget what fighters say and do outside the ring - minter, Hopkins, ayala, monzon etc etc most people are flawed (I alone am perfect)
but broner - he acts like a pillock outside and INSIDE the ropes!!!!!!!!!!!!
I suggest he is the most disliked fighter of them all.

Luis Resto comes to mind, but I began to feel more pity for him than hate after watching Assault in The Ring.

="SaadOffTheDeck"]The only reason hearns got the fight is because he was widely thought to be finished.
This perception doesn't change Leonard's status at the time either.

Code: Select all

they were both past their best, Hearns just happens to be a stylistic nightmare for Leonard at any point in their careers. Particularly over 12 rounds.
I think pretty much everyone including those two fighters themselves knew they were both past their best. But Hearns had the advantage above 160, regardless of what chances Leonard though he had there. And hindsight certainly tells us that Tommy continued to be successful for a few more years whilst Leonard wasn't.

P.S. I don't know what happened to the font in your post.

Ricardo Mayorga - Nincompoop.
Adrien Broner - Smug, arrogant & not as good as he thinks he is.
James Butler - Violent thug.
Andrew Golota - Dirty bar steward.
Riddick Bowe - Gobby twit (with an A) & terrified of a man who he insists is gay. :witzend:
