i think mostly it was his offensive mindset/ not giving a fvck about getting hit back, that hunter-killer style he had in the Kronk era and/or at 154; he got wobbled/buzzed/hurt much less frequently under Futch and/or at 160, I'd say

Yeah definitely, his output at 160+ is far more economical, slightly less energetic style too. Possibly how he had close fights with Kalambay and Graham but two things to consider - The first is that he was quite old by that point (he was considered potentially "past it" when fighting Watson, age being stated as his biggest chance of beating McCallum) and the second is that Kalamaby and Graham were excellent boxers with tricky styles, both based on not being physical.

This is a good one of McCallum's, vs Said Skouma. It shows him a bit more agressive and takes a few more chances than later in his career. Gets caught by some big shots from Skouma , but again his chin is outstanding.

No it's a perfectly good defence. The trick is to not reach out too far to parry, or if you do make sure it's a good enough to unbalance the other guy so he can't follow it up. It takes time and confidence to perfect a good parry and not show it so you open yourself up to a left hook. McCallum's is a perfect example in this video (which is really interesting) as it prevents Watson getting off with anything else.

as it happens i've always thought Watson was McCallum's best performance at the level of technique

His two fights with Toney were very good too. Actually thought he won both.

When you see how Julian Jackson wreaked havoc after he lost to McCallum that was a great win. Only a round or so while it lasted but a total war with both guys really going for it. McCallum was brilliant that night too.

McCallum was the bollocks. Him and Azumah Nelson two of my favourites from the 80s. Didn't have the stardust sprinkled on them the way the likes of Leonard and co, but great fighters nonetheless.

Yes it was one of those 'down to interpretation' and Toney's more solid shots seemed to sway the judges. I just thought McCallum was the better boxer in the first fight and outworked Toney and did the same in the rematch but could see why Toney won too. Plus, being a McCallum fan I was a tad biased.
