In this context that statement would mean more if Barker was fit. It wasn't a fight they had.

No, it was a stich up which merited some investigation which of course wasn't a popular view at the time because Darren is a lovely bloke who earned the pay day.

A bit like the lack of investigation into a lot of money going on Nicky Cook getting chimmed in the opener a few years back. If memory serves.

It was Abel Sanchez who said it that obviously trains GGG. He also trained Kovalev aswell though and they used to spar together when that was the case. Kovalev didnt enjoy it one bit apparantly.

I heard what might have been the same interview with Abel Sanchez and he didn't say that Kovalev was scared. He said that it wasn't good for Kovalev so he stopped them sparring. It seemed like he wanted to gloss over it a bit and not go into too much detail but the impression i got was that technically GGG was so much better Kovalev couldn't compete and wasn't going to get anything useful out of it.

If a bigger guy is sparring a smaller, faster much more technically skilled guy i can believe it could become too frustrating and disheartening to be a positive exercise.

there's less chance under normal sparring conditions for the size advantage to be made to tell, so easier for the smaller man to make the extra quickness etc pay

The story is defo Kovalev makes excuses to get out of sparring GGG. Whether it is true or not is a different matter

Some fighters don't like hard sparring and it doesn't automatically tell us anything about their character. IMO some people do go at it too much, too often in the gym. I'm a strong believer in hundreds and hundreds of rounds of low intensity sparring.

Yeah...certainly an argument that gym wars put miles on the clock

The problem here isn't whether or not it happened, but how much you read into it.
I'm sure when a top MW or SMW hits another clean in sparring when new stuff is being tried out, there's a chance of hitting the deck. Groves could KD Golovkin IMO - he's a beast but not too hard to hit - and am equally sure Golovkin could KD Groves.
None of it truly matters though!

Wasn't that before Kovalev turned pro and Golovkin was an amateur star who had turned pro with some success? Kovalev is very powerful but Golovkin is stylishly powerful, he sets people up and makes them pay for their mistakes.

It'd be a good spar now.

Yeah admittedly its not something you can fully trust.

Sparring is completely different to fighting I'd say groves would give ggg a boxing lesson in sparring with big gloves and head gear
