there was a lot of confusion and talking and yelling, and some may have gotten up from their seats but i don't specifically recall that. speaking for myself i think i was one of the many who had no idea at first what the hell was going on.
as the rounds went on it was apparent that all ray had to do was stay on his feet for the latter rounds and he would win.

one thing that impressed me during the fight was robinson's punching power. her actually seemed to have rocked maxim a couple of times, man maxim had a terrific chin and had fought against heavies as well as light heavies in his career. for that reason i thought maxim would win while robinson had fought mostly welters and some middleweights . I was surprised as the fight went on how great he really was.

jacklem it gives me chills to know that you were sitting in the seats as that match transpired. I'd love to get your top 10 list of matches you attended. (Whether the top 10 historic moments that you attended....OR simply the 10 best fights that you attended.....I know these could differ greatly.

Also....I'm sure the Sullivan Kilrain fight was in your top 10.....Mississipi in the Summer can be murder! uh..... ok no age joke or southern inference should be taken from that. Well....no southern inference for sure.

buzzy.....i don't think i can list them as the top ten. let me just mention some that i recall--

Charles/Marciano one. certainly the most exciting. you know how i am about charles and i saw this a the albee theatre in cincinnati. full house-most were rooting for the local boy. we almost went crazy screaming during the early rounds because charles was winning them. one of buy favorite rounds to play is round 4, where ezzard is really beating up on marciano...slugging with the slugger.

charles/marciano two - i didn't expect charles to win this one. i didn't think he could equal his great performance in the first one.

Walcott/marciano one - jersey joe fought such a great fight....wonderful moves and good punching. loved it up through round 12.

moore /marciano...a friend of mine who knew boxing couldn't believe marciano's being the world champion. thought he'd stumble out of the ring he looked so bad. We loved archie's knockdown of rocky. a great perfectly landed punch. then rocky got right up. well, archie had some good rounds, but as with all of my mArciano fights, his always had a bad ending.

the most shocking was patterson/johansen one- you must remember we weren't seeing this after the fact on film...it was live tv. ingo was a mystery...got there mostly on the basis of his one round kayo of machen--which could have meant he just caught machen cold. ingemar kept saying his right was "so fast you won't see it...and that's what happened. each guy feeling the other one out and then..boom...floyd was on the canvas for the first of seven times. whole theatre went crazy.

i thought ingemar would win the rematch, but floyd came back with one of his greatest fights.

there are more, and if instead of a list you'd like some of the details with them, i'll conjure up the memories. just let me know.

hey Jaclem, check out the Marciano vs Charles I 60th anniversary thread.
I posted a hyperlink to an article about a reporter who wrote about the fight
from an all-black audience at a closed-circuit theatre in Baltimore,Maryland
that was really interesting to read.

as a lad of 9 years old I remember seeing that LAND OF THE GIANTS episode - bowers claims to have invented the mute - a gadget for altering the sound of the trumpet - but it turns out the invention was a few years before bowers's claim - ray robinson looks appalled to be called a liar. in fact I didn't even know until now that sugar ray played "bowers" - I just remember it was a very good episode of a fave show and it stuck in the old memory :TU:

Sugar Ray Robinson didnt sound too bad playing that tune on the trumpet.
I wonder who may have given him lessons over the years?
I read where Ray Robinson gave Miles Davis boxing lessons whenever he was in town
at Harry Wiley's Gym at Broadway and 136th st. NYC back in the 1950's.
Although Robinson was more of a Duke Ellington and Jimmy Lunceford fan,
maybe Miles Davis gave him a few trumpet lessons in return?

I reckon too many fighters these days blow their own trumpets

ray didn't need to, his greatness was pretty much in evidence
