Guys like Enoki and Sato were solid contender types, wins over JMM, Saucedo, Yordan and even a shot Gainer weren't awful. Also Hosono wasn't too shabby either. Sure he padded out those defences though it's not like he feasted on total no hopers.

True, some don't know who he fought. I do. He obviously should get credit for JMM, not matter what one thinks of the outcome. Sato moving up in weight, and Gainer were decent opponents early in the his career, and can't criticize him for Juarez or Rojas, who always had a puncher's chance, either. But Saucedo was and will always be a punchless Argentine club fighter, Enoki was marginally better despite his nice record and Yordan I've always thought was overrated based on two solid rounds vs Guerrero. John fought a lot of overmatched, marginal opposition, but taken as a whole, he had more B- and C names than some of the longtime belt-holders today. IMO, a lot of the criticism is that, particularly in the second half of his career, he consistently fought lesser opposition than other featherweight beltholders and there was never any serious attempt at unification. Not laying blame, because John made good money fighting in Asia and I have no idea if any of the other beltholders wanted to go to Asia to fight him.

I don't care how many fights a champion has, a champion needs to act like a champion. I'm not going to jump to conclusions just yet, but lets just hope he doesn't hold the title captive while gaining pro experience.

Fighting your mandatory isn't holding a title captive.

It seems the only reasonable path for him to some is to move up, fight Mayweather and Pac and then retire

This is a good fight. Good first title defense and, while it is a step down in class from his insane first few bouts, it is still absolute A level for this stage of his career.
