Aftermath wrote:Steele helping out King is a myth perpetuated on internet forums and started on HBO's Legendary Nights by Lou Duva who also blatantly lied about what he told Taylor before the last round.
If he was there for King, Steele sure did let Taylor get away with lots of low blows. By Duva's own admission, all those low blows by Taylor were intentional.
Fabricated myths and excuses don't change the fact that Taylor was knocked out by Chavez.
Sit down, have a coke, relax and think this thing through. Maybe have a look at the fight that is being referred to here, that always help regain one's balance.
I'm sure you'll get a better sense of this once all the excitement of expressing your opinion on a public forum dissipates.
and yes....in the second fight, he was knocked out.

Yeah, Taylor was knocked out both times by Chavez...no matter how much you try to pretend he didn't. It's not an opinion. Saying that Flash Elorde would've beaten Edwin Rosario is an opinion. I'm just posting documented facts against those fabricated myths. You can have a coke or accept reality, but Chavez did knock out Taylor and put him in the hospital in 1990...your emotions can't change history or the record books.

I'm sure he has seen the fight.
Just because he didn't see it the same way as you doesn't mean he is out of whack with reality does it?

I've always wondered what part of "Do you want to continue" it was that Meldrick Taylor couldn't understand.

Taylor was knocked out? There is a difference between differing opinions and being a fan boy. Perhaps I've misread him, do you think he would admit that the judge who had Chavez ahead was offering a brutally awful card? Did randall get screwed in the rematch when Chavez quit? If somebody can give up those two facts than I'll listen to the 'opinion' that it was a good stoppage, no matter how adamantly I disagree with it.

I think all he's saying is the result was a TKO win for Chavez. It was, wasn't it?
I'm not a fan of Chavez. I think he is over-rated and he was a right whiny little b@stard when things didn't go his way.
Had the fight gone to the cards, Taylor should clearly have won in my opinion. But bad judging is rife in boxing and has been for years. You see it almost every weekend and then you see the same inept fools back judging the week after.
However, it didn't go to the judges to decide on and, in my opinion, rightly so.

Has someone questioned the official verdict in any fight, ever? No doubt JCC is credited with a stoppage. Was that the point of the thread? LOL.
To me saying Chavez knocked out Taylor here with conviction is no different than saying Casamayor out-boxed Jose Santa-Cruz.
Why should I treat shitty reffing any different than shitty judging?

I'm not asking you to treat 'shitty' reffing any differently to shitty anything.
What I'm saying is that in my opinion it wasn't 'shitty' refereeing. It was good refereeing as I did not want to see even one more punch landed on a guy who was so out of it he could barely stand.
Maybe I am too soft but I don't get a buzz out of that sort of thing.
Anyway, we are not going to agree on whether it should have been stopped or not. Even if you bombard me with LOL and the dreaded

I respect your opinion so i asked you a couple questions. As I already stated this is an issue that has no yield in anyone. For me, it's one of the worst injustices in Boxing history, Corrales/Castillo 1 is another. You're fine with it, cool. It just cracks me up to read that Chavez knocked Taylor out.

I respect your opinion also. You don't have an axe to grind and, I can tell from your posts, you closely followed boxing at that time with an open mind and a critical eye.
I understand your opinion. If Steele had not stopped it and the bell had rung almost immediately or Taylor had managed to grab and hold until it did then, of course, we'd be discussing this as simply a great fight we'd both watched when we were much younger men.

Agree with this.
I watched that fight live that night with some pretty sharp boxing fans, the majority of whom were pulling for Chavez, and the near unanimous reaction was that Taylor really got screwed badly.

Whatever the feelings of people about the fight it is very, very sad to hear Meldrick speaking today. Still a young man but clearly in the early stages of dementia.
He was such a gifted athlete.
There are so few champions of my day that seem to be unscathed by some form of fairly severe brain trauma. They really did put their lives on the line.
