Caroll, the lotto lout?

He spent it on leather jackets, fine 24ct bog chains around his neck, roast lamb dinners, drugs and hookers - hardly a waste in my opinion.

I see someone earlier saying that Burns suggested he will 'do the weight properly next time at light welter'. My understanding of his interview was that he meant doing the weight properly at Lightweight again. He sounded to me as if he doesn't fancy Light Welter after that fight. I agree with earlier comments that he didn't appear to put on good weight.

Mitchell was a decent opponent to be fair but he was also a Warren fighter, so I guess Bunny didnt really mind who won.

Mitchell claimed he'd never been better beforehand. He's never "on the job" when he gets chinned.

I don't think he is necessarily finished, he just needs a promoter to do a superb job of rebuilding his confidence; look at the wins - Martinez, Katsidis, Moses, Mitchell are all world class fighters and he beat them all comfortably. That speaks of a guy who is, if nothing else, not outclassed at teh very top level. The defeats? Beltran (because it was a defeat even if the judges didn't see it) broke his jaw which is just one of those things, Crawford is a class operator and Zlaticanin a narrow victor in a brave first fight back. I think some help with his diet and a confidence booster or two against proper fighters and he may well surprise people again.

Ricky is in high court now, being sued for £2m by his former promoter. The hearing began today and is expected to last several days.

Why oh why oh why oh why was Ricky Burns fighting a few days ago when this potentially life-changing court case was about to begin ? No doubt Ricky wanted the fight but those around him should have persuaded him against it. His stock diminishes every time he steps into the ring. You want your fighter in optimum physical and mental condition.

It was those around him who got him into this position when he switched promoters. Looking at the BBC article, it said he signed a 5 fight deal with Hearn - Gonzalez, Beltran, Crawford, Zlaticanin, Lepelley. I assume that contract is now up and he's a free agent. I don't think it's a coincidence that his loss of form came when he signed with Matchroom, all the upheaval and the legal issues surrounding it can't have been good for his state of mind. If the 5 fight deal is true, he shouldn't have any contractual obligation to anyone right now, so he shouldn't be in the ring again until all of this is over, time away will do him good, the last proper break he's had was after fighting Beltran, that he used to recover from a broken jaw, with a newborn baby in the house. Before that you have to go back over 2 years, to just after fighting Paulus Moses, to his last injury free time away from boxing. Let him have a couple of months out of the gym, deal with the court case, then assess the situation. If he still wants to box and has the desire to go on, get back in the gym and fight again, if the time off tells him that his best days are behind him and he doesn't want to fight anymore, then retire.

That's a fair point Expe but there's a few assumptions in there, I don't think any top promoter lets a marquee fighter just box on to the end of his contract without sticking another one in front of him. I doubt he is a free agent. I agree with you time away will do him good but with a £2m court case hanging over you, you are not going to enjoy garden leave from the sport. A fighter's earning powers depend on his reputation and he sucked last weekend. He would have been better off sitting it out, nevermind his peace of mind, I am talking about the overall effort to rebuild and repackage him. Last weekend convinced all but the die-hard fans he hasn't got anything left at world level. If I were handling him I wouldn't have put him in the ring with this court case hanging over him. A week from now there could be a decision in the court case, if he really wanted a return to the ring I'd have put him on one of the late Oct or Nov shows.

I hope he wins his court case fights Harrison for a final payday and bows out regardless of the result.
It doesn't look like the move to Simms has worked the magic he thought it would and propping up Match room bills is a sad demise for a guy who beat the odds and achieved so much.
