I forgot about Stewpot. Yeah if there's anyone worse than McDonald it's him. He can't even manage to read the flippin scorecards right.

How much is it to bring over Lennon Jnr or Buffer? Often thing if promoters cut out their expenses and put it into their fighters purse, more big fights would be made.

I don't think anyone buys tickets or puts on the TV with anticipation of Buffer and in most big British cards MOST fans don't know who is going to tbe the MC until the night of the fight - where tickets have already been bought. E.g. John McDonald doing Froch vs Groves 1 and Buffer doing Groves' comeback fight.

I have to say, there is a bit of a knack to being a good MC. Everytime I meet someone new and they ask what I do...I am almost always greeted with a "Lets get Ready to Rumble" and an "oh yeah... Its Go Time" and believe me...not everyone can do it... In fact most cannot.

That being said, it may not be rocket science...but IMHO, there sure seems to be a lack of good professional MCs out there!

There is a cracking MC who does a lot of Steve Goodwin shows. An American guy called Brett Freeman. He brings a good bit of glitz and really works the crowd.
I think its a much harder job than it looks. Its one thing for guys to just stand there and read out the boxers stats, hometown etc but to actually bring the crowd in is much harder.
Not a massive fan of John McDonald, I don't think he's awful, just think that there are a few better than him. Michael Pass used to be very good and play along with the crows and their Elvis taunts. Its not just announcing.

Thanks for the kind words pal, that's me, I'm Bret Freeman :-). I love my job! Especially when people notice!

Fair play to you mate. You get the crowd going and do more than just announce the boxers. Look forward to seeing you perform again.

Don't slip up Brett, or the forums will get you and take you apart piece by piece. Like one of those sick Chinese fish dishes, whilst the fish is still alive !

The forum trolls always have their chop sticks nearby, ready for MC's slipping up.

(No pressure :) )

Is Mike Goodall still MC'ing ? I remember when there was a punch up in the crowd and he was trying to stop it . I used to like Mike Shinfield when he was FW's MC when he did the Wednesday night shows on ITV, there was also Alan Hughes who did Matchroom originally, thought he was decent too

I like John Macdonald personally and professionally.

He has a fun glint in his eye and I don't think he's a bad MC.

He's better than the bland yank, can't remember his name, who has the lamest intro in boxing 'it's shoooowtime'. Horrible.

There's no one to rival the human chocolate box (loves himself so much he wishes he could eat himself) Michael Buffer.

John McDonald better Jimmy Lennon Jnr? :o

Each to their own mate, but I cannot for the life of me see how McDonald is in any shape or form "better" than Lennon Jnr. Unless by "better" you mean better at mispronouncing a boxer's name, missing announcement information and completely failing at building suspense.

In that case, yes he is infinitely better.

It's definitely a job that's a lot harder than it looks - I've done some presenting for Charity shows in front of largish audiences (200-500) on stage and it's bloody hard to control your tone of voice and remember all the information you have to say and in what order when your heart feels like it's going to come out of your mouth. But Lennon Jnr and Michael Buffer are masters at speaking in a cool, calm and concise manner. They're consummate professionals who smoothly recite all the necessary information and the timing and control of raising their voices at the right moment is just absolutely spot on IMO.

Yeah, point taken. But Lennon just looks so bland and his catchphrase is poor. He just doesn't get the blood up.

Here's a cool article on ring announcing, have a read. http://m.espn.go.com/extra/boxing/story ... FB&w=1ehjc

IMO John did a great job on Saturday. As an MC when you do something right you get no praise. You do something wrong and they'll remember you forever. John's one of the most experienced guys in the business and is very busy with the darts and other matchroom duties too. Ring announcing may seem easy to most fight fans but if it was that easy you'd all be doing it. MCing at Johns level is a high pressure, high stress invioroment. His style may not be your cup of tea but, everyone is allowed an opinion; and a lot of people like Johns style, including myself.
