A life ban is inconsistent with other sporting assaults. Cantona, Suarez, countless Ice Hockey players and closer to home, Chisora, Tyson, Mayweather etc.,

Hitting the ref is the difference its like a police killer will get a hugely different sentance to a murderer who killed a civilian

The reason for this boxer 'going off his head' is deeper than just having a momentary loss of control. It's what happens in his gym over the years and months he's been there. There is obviously no discipline and no control by the coaches.

In most gyms I know of any new lad very quickly learns whose boss and what's acceptable behaviour and what's not. In amateur boxing, like it or not, they learn quickly that that inside that ring the ref is the boss. Another issue is the WAY young boxers are taught nowadays - it seems to be all about aggression. In my day we admired the guy who could box your head off and never seemed to take a punch. We just couldn't understand how it could be done. Now the praise seems to go to the 'mad man' who wants to take your head off with every punch.

Some might remember a Scottish boxer called Evan Armstrong. He came to our gym one night when he was in his late 40's, and got so frustrated watching one of our lads who'd turned pro that he jumped into the ring, jeans and pullover, put on the gloves and we all watched a boxing lesson from an expert. It's all about skill and self control.

He could've simply barged the other boxer once and saved the ref from serious damage. By the time he barged the guy, the security would've got in there

On the same hand, the security guy fvcking tackled and yanked that prick straight out the ring. Was he attacked by an angry mod? No. He could've literally barged the other boxer slightly then fvcked off ASAP

The Croatian security guard will know the lay of the land as he's operating in his own town. The Lithuanian opponent wouldn't have had a scooby. It's easy to be brave on the internet.

Because the security man was Croatian and of course he had the back up of other big beefy Croatian security men, an out of town boxer trying to play the hero would have been unwise and thus, why he was instructed by his own corner to get out of there, the Lithuanian trying to physically intervene could have instigated a full scale riot. If you're walking down the street and you see 3 men robbing and beating a pensioner it wouldn't be sensible to intervene with it being 3 on 1 and all that but a decent person would step in anyway.

It's hardly the same, but you would have gone in where a boxer who is champion of his nation - who is fighting on the other fellas own turf - didn't, right?

As has been said, easy to say thousands of miles away, sat in the safety in your own home in the UK.

FWIW when Byun Jung-Il's outraged fans stormed the ring at the Seoul Olympics, an Argentine ref saved the Kiwi referee (the target of the crowd's opprobrium) by putting himself in harm's way, & there were shitloads trying to get at the New Zealander.

I am not commenting on anyone's ability or otherwise to step up in this situation, I'm just pointing out that there's a historic precedent...

There is, it is like stating that there is a historic precedent of Victoria Cross winners like Colonel H running into machine gun nests, not every soldier is going to do the same - it is as rare as rocking horse shit. Fair play to anyone who has the minerals to put their life at risk that way but I for one wouldn't - I would have ran out of that ring faster than the Lithuanian and I would have been 5 stone heavier than him in my erm prime.

In no way am I dissing the Lithuanian kiddie's decision to fvck right off, I probably would've done the same meself.
