completely asleep as per an anaesthetic, without waking up. the induction agent and the muscle relaxant are used routinely during surgery, but you have a ventilator to breathe for the patient (as hand squeezing a bag for a few hours is a pain) and a drug called neostigmine that reverses the muscle relaxant when the time is ready. the injection only keeps people asleep for a few minutes, sleep is maintained during surgery by a patient breathing the vapour from a volatile liquid.........desflurane, sevoflurane or isoflurane.
