I use ad orthodox stance and have done since I was a kid when I first stepped in the gym, still do now when I train twice a week. I carry speed and power with my right hand far better than when I try southpaw.
But I also play golf right handed. I think wht lefties it's probably due to being forced to do things right handed as a child.
My wife I the other hand when she comes down the gym uses a southpaw stance and is completely right handed. If it feels natural then it's probably the best. If you can nail you technique then it will be a weapon in your armoury
I'm right handed and more comfortable in an orthodox stance, but I prefer punching with my left hand to my right, find it easier to plant my weight on my front foot and turn my hips and shoulders into the punch.

Good thing about a right handed southpaw is the stiff jab.. Try walking through that. I think it's a big advantage especially with the awkwardness.. Should do what comes natural and train that way then it will flow better when throwing punches.. Anytime I spar or train I switch mostly right handed though. But probably useless either way ha

The leading strong hand jab has people thinking "shit, if that's a jab, what the feck is the backhand like?" until the left hand fly swatter comes, then you have to hit them with a strong jab to put them off again
All about feet for me. (I am right handed) Now southpaw I am very mobile for a heavy, and I literally feel I could avoid being hit throughout a whole fight if (fitness allows), and I fight on the back foot. But being a banger I have to go looking for them as they are usually on the back foot.
Orthodox, I can do this in MMA easily, but in boxing my movement turns into a complete stiff load of shite as you have to hold your stance more rigid. I've done work with a good coach to try and change this, but it just does not work for me in boxing. It is a shame really as I have KO power in my right, although my right hook is devastating (im told)

when you say you are just starting training, but have 'done this though my life with bits of padwork etc', am I correct to assume this (now) is the first time you have started formally training in a gym environment?
basically i don't think there is a 'right' answer, here. I certainly don't agree that being a right-handed southpaw will necessarily mean you 'won't have any power in the later rounds'. but if 'all' you have done in the past is a bit of pad/bagwork and this is the first time you have done 'proper' training, it certainly isn't too late to switch back to orthodox. apologies if i have misread any of that.
i sometimes wonder if trainers etc say stuff like that because they aren't as comfortable training southpaws.
Your understanding is pretty much correct. I've been in gyms before but only for three months here and there - never had a fight.
When I've sparred ive felt ive hit hard enough without being a big puncher and because it feels so alien fighting orthodox I don't have any more power in that stance anyway.
Basically looking by the theme to this thread, there are loads of 'wrong' hitters and some people have been very successful so I should stick with fighting southpaw?
Cheers guys.
