Stu, you're probably right. With the shadow teams we've had out lately, even though they have jelled well and got some good results, Wales would have been badly exposed. Too many key players would be missing.

But it's the principle of the matter ....... and the glaring double standards of the Ferdinand case.

Too true, not saying this because of my nationality, but they should have made an example of Russia - it happens in Weight Lifting (remember the Bulgarian team ommited for the 1996 Olympics because two members tested positive.

I think kicking the Russians out and replacing them with Wales (as the FAW wanted) would have been too harsh.

But they could have arranged a third game at a neutral venue ...... or when it became too late for that, they could have docked points from the Russians and started them in the tournament on -2 points or something.

i am no expert on wales and all things welsh but i`m sure the last time wales qualified for a major football tournament was back in 58.
is this true?
if so its a pretty sad state of affairs for a country who has produced the likes of ian rush, mark hughes, neville southall, ryan giggs etc.

The problem with Welsh teams of the past is they had great players in certain positions but were lacking badly in other areas. I also think strength in depth has been a problem for a long while now.

I agree with the sentiment that Russia should have faced some sort of sanction, at very worst a play-off with Wales at a neutral venue, as lamphey suggests. It's not a great message to send out, that they can get away with playing a drug cheat.

On the subject of Ferdinand, it's my firm belief that he felt a drugs test was beneath him. I don't buy his "i forgot" excuse for a second.

Wales reached the quarter finals of the 1976 Euro tournament.

This seems to get overlooked because of the format of this tournament. Instead of the 8 qualified teams heading off somewhere for the finals, the four quarter-final games were played on a home and away basis.

Wales were paired with Yugoslavia. They lost the first game 2-0 over in Yugoslavia, then drew 1-1 at Ninian Park.
But they really could have gotten through in the Cardiff game. Incompetent officials and bad luck stopped them reaching the semis (couple of goals disallowed, Flynn hitting the woodwork, Yorath missed a penalty, the Yugoslav goal coming from a penalty that should never have been given).

But you're right, they should have reached more finals. So many times it has been in Wales' hands going into the last qualifying match yet they always manage to lose out.

I´ve been watching football since 1974. on almost every tournament Spain and/or Portugal were one of the favourites. but they didn´t make it. the "killer instinct" is missing, the last 5%.

it´s the same with the english team. they have been waiting since ´66...... o.k. england was robbed in `86 by "god´s hand"......
