Hagler by a round or two. Massive fan of his, so difficult to be impartial.

I remember SRL saying that Hagler told him during the fight to quit running like a little bitch, and to fight like a man. :OhYes:

Leonard by 2 rounds. Hagler let about the first 5 rounds go to Leonard as i think he thought Leonard would tire & he would get to Leonard. Unfortunately he misjudged Leonard. Mind you, I thought Hagler nearly had him in that epic 9th until Leonard fought his way out.

I don't know why people go on about the result of this fight.
Leonard won a clear decision.

Same here. I've always thought Hagler won this fight and I've seen it many times.

I don't think either man had enough of an edge to be called a " clear winner." In fact a draw probably would have been a fair outcome. I barely gave it to Ray by the most narrow of margins, but I say that with no real conviction.

In retrospect, all the rounds were close.

Interestingly though, at the time, with the drinking, Pro-Leonard announcing, Leonard's hotdoging, I would have been shocked if Hagler had won.

I have watched that fight so many times and still think Leonard did enough to get the nod. Tactics wise Hagler should not have switched stances during the fight. It didn't help his cause.

Leonard ... but in such a shitty way ...

That fight is what made me completely dislike SRL and begin to see his legacy as inflated. Everything he did got 3X credit. It was like watching an 80's version of how HBO used to suck off De La Hoya. I went back and started to look at many of his other fights and began to notice he was always given the benefit of the doubt. He seemed to be savior of boxing from those angry black men of the political side of the 70's ... and the public ate it up.

Mind you, I still think he should be a unanimous Hall of Fame selection. He had one the greatest boxing career that we know of, but he's not on boxing's Mt. Rushmore ... if boxing had a grandiose disrespectful symbol of genocide/dominance on/over another people on their sacred lands.

Leonard in a close one. Hagler more lost it. He goofed off in the beginning and it cost him. He's been the biggest crybaby ever since. Hagler needs to look in the mirror and stop crying about a robbery that never was.

Ray did far too much running in some of those rounds. It's no wonder he wanted a giant ring. But Hagler knew that, and still was hitting air more often than not. Regardless of how we scored it, no way should Marvin have lost his title like that. Ray never hurt him, never really slowed him down, and it was Ray who was badly hurt in the 5th & buzzed a few other times. Marvin did more damage, and was forced to chase the guy most of the night. Ray was pretty much carried back to his corner after the last bell. Marvin was waiting for 13-15..

A very narrow win for Leonard.

Hagler blew it by spending the first four rounds bitching, cursing, trying to prove he was macho & fighting orthodox, when he was far better as a southpaw.

He allowed Leonard to gain confidence & establish a rhythm and although he did close it up in the end, I don't think he did enough to retain his title.

Leonard completely out-psyched Hagler before & during the fight.

I don't like to speak ill of Hagler as I loved watching him in his pomp, but he seemed more concerned with his payday & his legacy, rather than winning the fight.

He probably took Leonard for granted a little bit, but I do believe he messed up, but he won't want to hear that from the likes of me.

That was the problem for Hagler.

Like Leonard was ever going to stand and trade with someone that monstered the last two men who stupidly tried that tactic.

Hagler had lost all his speed by 1985, never mind 1987, so his only way to win fights was to hope that his opponent could be drawn into a war.

Leonard was never going to be daft enough to do that, especially after so long out of elite level fighting.

Whenever I read stuff like this, I instantly know that people like you have spent entirely too much time listening to the commentators rather than watching the fight.

Leonard showboated and shoe-shined his way to victory, he knew he was the crowd favorite and he played to that and that one official having it scored 118-110 I wonder what fight he was watching.

Sure Hagler gave away the first 3 rounds but he started getting measured, timed and caught repeatedly and it appears to me that none of his body work was counted but he was breaking Leonard to the gut the entire 5th-12th round.

The fight was close but I thought Hagler pulled it out by a point or two.

I don't need commentators to tell me who won a fight.

I've watched it many times, sometimes without commentary, but initially & mostly with UK commentary which didn't mention any of those things & I still think Leonard edged it; the 118-110 score was truly laughable & that judge didn't even have the 'benefit' of listening to US commentators either.

Many of us will never agree & it was indeed a close fight, so I can't understand why so many people get incensed either way.

Sugar Ray Leonard or Marvin Hagler? And why?
Leonard won. Hagler simply gave away 3 or 4 of the first 4 rounds

I agree with everything here except the 118-110 being "laughable." The reason is that even though I agree the fight was close, virtually every round was also close. If a viewer liked SRL's style, it is understandable how he saw SRL winning 10 of the rounds. My memory of the fight, which I have viewed several times is that SRL won the first 4 rounds or so, and the next 8 rounds could all have gone either way.

Does anyone remember if it was at a catch weight? They both weighed at about 158, and Hagler never came in light for his fights. I know SRL was the original catch weight king. I remember he wanted the fight 12 rounds, a huge ring, etc.

Boxrec wiki doesn't say anything about a catchweight.

http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... &cat=boxer
It was not unusual for Hagler to be under the middleweight limit at the scales. Marvin hadn't tipped the scales at 160 since May 1983.
Every fight after that he was under the limit.
