Slight change to the subject, but relative to some recent conjecture between mixed sport fighting.
Quarry could probably beat anyone who has shown up to the Masters.....with the exception of Tiger Woods.
Tiger may be a bridge too far Quarry.
Quarry 6'
Woods 6' 1"
Quarry vs. Masters (Sparring)
Re: Quarry vs. Masters (Sparring)
It's not getting knocked out with a shot that hurts you. It's not hanging in there taking a beating that hurts you. it's poor defensive technique that kills you ... hiding behind your gloves, trading punches, walking onto punches, pulling straight back from punches.. getting turned sideways.. not being slick enough with your offense and being a sucker for counterpunches.. and doing that day after day... year after year... camp after camp... and fight after fight - without learning, improving, and mastering defensive technique and efficiency every single day as your career goes on.Tony1244 wrote:Broomhall wrote:Of the heavyweights mentioned in this thread, Masters died at 41, Quarry and Ledoux died of dementia, and Bobick is in the advanced stages of dementia. I'm surprised Bobick has dementia from boxing. When Bobick got hurt, he was stopped within seconds. Its the guys like Ali and Quarry who I thought were more suseptible because they hung in there and took so many shots.
Kids have to be instructed and programed in this concept from day one... Boxing is the Art of Self Defense before it's anything else.. The best defense is a flawless defense - combined with a masterful offense. But defense comes first.. If Boxing is your career, and you want to play Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Tennis, and go fishing with your grandchildren...you need to be a defensive wizard within 5 or 6 years. You can't allow anybody to overmatch you for money or for any other reason. You ONLY take fights you have a fair shot at winning... Being somebody's punching bag... cannon fodder... cherry-pick... tune-up fight... acclimation fight... or whatever you want to call it should NOT be acceptable for you... Don't do it.. Don't think about... Don't get back to them... Don't ask for more money... There's a very simple expression "That's not a fight I'd be interested in right now. That would overmatch me at this time." If they argue with you say "I'll be the judge of that."
