Officially at least, Eddie has done this frequently last year - Everytime a combination of Quigg, McDonnell and Froch have fought on the same bill.

if someone told me that Mathews would be fighting for a world title in a couple of years, when i was watching him get a bit of a pasting (soz Derry) from that old Italian fella in 2012, i would have laughed in their face.

Can't think of a more rollercoaster career than his in recent times; to pick yourself up and get back at it, after multiple setbacks and disappointments, is a massive credit to both fighter and coach.

What a way to top off a career, genuine world title fight in your home town.

For what it's worth, i think Derry matches up real well with Abril, and i can see him putting in an inspired performance to win it.

No sky sports and a show like this deserves better than a rubbish stream, so gonna break the bank to get to this show in decent seats, RIP my wallet (and potentially marriage)

It's very hard not to like Derry,Absolute warrior and has taken his licks but also has real one punch power.
i would love Derry to win so he could defend and retire on good money after a very long,hard productive career.

Abril TKO after the doc stops it when Derry's nose inevitably goes.

Wasn't Rees only a "regular" champion also? I thought Ricky Hatton won the WBA "Super Title" by beating Maussa and Mbaye got the regular title?

What your saying is right for Quigg/McDonnell but isn't it the same for Rees - just saying?

I am gonna put my money on Derry. If there is one thing I have learned in watching his career is never to write the guy off, heart as big as George Osbornes wallet.

The guy can fight. If Abril doesnt step on him early then he had better have a packed dinner in the corner with as he will be in for a long hard night.

I was there at Derry's pro debut at the Guild Hall in Preston. Can't believe it's been 12 years since then!

Might have to make the trip up north for this one so his debut to world title 8)

Hatton dropped the WBA belt after Maussa when he went up in weight to fight Collazo, M'Baye won the vacant title a few months later, Rees took it off him the next year.

Pretty sure the Super-champ thing wasn't going back then. Gavin Rees won a genuine title.

It's been going for over a decade, someone in the Australian forum called Anthony Mundine a 3 time world champion. One was an interim title, the other two were regular titles while Ottke and Kessler were the champion. It's become more prominent in recent years with fighters being upgraded without unifying and Quigg and McDonnell winning regular titles, but it isn't a new thing.

I'd love to read a series of interviews specifically with trainers and their approach to handling their fighters - from the physical training to the mentoring aspect that goes alongside such an intense and emotion driven sport. Someone do it!
