I think sometimes people forget just how good Ali could be before his lay off. Fast, athletic and just plain nasty.
Sounds like he must have been the GOAT.Broomhall wrote:I think sometimes people forget just how good Ali could be before his lay off. Fast, athletic and just plain nasty.
No, not really. He lost his most important fight. He was fortunate that his opponent was ring rusty and had medical issues for that one.SenorPipino wrote:Sounds like he must have been the GOAT.Broomhall wrote:I think sometimes people forget just how good Ali could be before his lay off. Zora Folley, Doug Jones and Joe Frazier were "a lot bigger than Jerry?"DaveyMac wrote:I think the fights a toss-up with Foster a small favorite. The HW's that gave Foster trouble were a lot bigger than Jerry (who was basically a cruiser) and two of them were Ali and Frazier so it's not like JQ sized guys were that much of a challenge to him.

But most people can't handle that truth. They've been programmed to believe Ali and the 70s were the best era ever. It was the most exciting and entertaining (because of Ali) but Lennox Lewis and the Klitschkos took HWT boxing to a higher level.
No, the truth is Klitschko probably would have even broken into the top ten in the 1970s . . .montrealsuper wrote:Klitschko is actually superior to all the 70s HWTS. Even Ali.

Probably. But most of the Top 10 had more huevos than today's sad lot of contenders.raylawpc wrote:No, the truth is Klitschko probably would have even broken into the top ten in the 1970s . . .montrealsuper wrote:Klitschko is actually superior to all the 70s HWTS. Even Ali.

I disagree. Vlad had the athleticism to control haye, and really against ali and frazier there would be an enormous gulf in power and strength. Yes vlad before steward ironed him out was a ko waiting to happen but in his prime he is almost impossible to fight. Maybe ali would have opened him up with his speed but it is a close call imo.SenorPipino wrote:I think Wlad's rather delicate chin (or have you forgotten his embarrassing KO losses to Sanders, Brewster and journeyman Puritty???) and lumbering movement eliminates him as someone who can hang with a mobile Muhammad Ali (or even a Frazier) or seriously deserve consideration as an all-time heavyweight top ten candidate.

Yes! That's a fact! Their probably are many comparisons you could draw a definite conclusion but..would not count on it for the comparison made in this one!Syntax Error wrote:Please bear in mind that an opinion is just that; an opinion, not the truth or a fact.montrealsuper wrote:Klitschko is actually superior to all the 70s HWTS. You have no way of proving what you've said, so it cannot be the 'truth'.
I was just thinking the same. I go with almost everybody in picking Quarry stoppage, though for me probably late after a good fight. Ive always thought that Harold Johnson did better than Bob against heavyweights, despite being a lot shorter. He outboxed Jones, albeit light heavy. Jones stopped Bob. Beat Nino Valdes,a big heavy. Archie Moore undoubtably better at heavy.raylawpc wrote:Zora Folley, Doug Jones and Joe Frazier were "a lot bigger than Jerry?"DaveyMac wrote:I think the fights a toss-up with Foster a small favorite. Doug Jones sure wasn't. He fought Ali at a fat 188 and gave him Hell. A lot of people had Jones winning. He stopped Foster when Bob had about 10 fights, but Jones couldn't handle heavyweights, even skinny Ernie Terrell beat him up. Thad Spencer, a very small heavy, was too much for Terrell.raylawpc wrote:Zora Folley, Doug Jones and Joe Frazier were "a lot bigger than Jerry?"DaveyMac wrote:I think the fights a toss-up with Foster a small favorite.
