Fighters who's careers was ruined by injurys
Re: Fighters who's careers was ruined by injurys
Suppose Terry Marsh deserves a mention.....some much bigger championship fights were supposed to be waiting down the line for him but he was diagnosed with epilepsy....and it was game over.
Winning the European and IBF titles hardly consistutes a ruined career....but at the same time Marsh never got to fght the big stars and it was an abrupt end for a good fighter. Liked Marsh a great deal as a young fan....although there was something a bit odd about him even then and the epilepsy diagnosis had a few cynical folk whispering.

Cheers. .....bad luck, never seen him fight but heard he was very good. Anyone who can beat gomez is clearly no mug.

Lear had ability but he wasn't the most dedicated kid was he

I remember his trainer saying that he was happy if he'd got money in his pocket for a pint and a bet; I liked him even more then.

Anyone remember heilder ali? I remember warren and kevin mitchell both said he would be a world champion. Never performed well as a pro and seem to remeber he retired due to an injury
Re: Fighters who's careers was ruined by injurys
Not sure as I didn't know him but there are not many in this country who had the potential of Gomez. His flawa and improper application stopped him from hitting the world stage but of all the guys I've seen a lot of he's is the one who could've done so much more.hurlock wrote:Lear had ability but he wasn't the most dedicated kid was he

A broken neck amazingly didn't stop Vinny Pazienza.
Did anyone mention Paul Williams?

I think he had problems with cuts? not sure, if not would like to know why he jacked it in.

I can't remember what happened to the Bowens. I think they both retired around the same time and one later came back about 8 years later but seem to remember both careers sort of fizzled out. Was one due to injury?

not quite with you mate, what is there about an epilepsy diagnosis that would precipitate cynical whispers?Bodyshot3 wrote:Suppose Terry Marsh deserves a mention.....some much bigger championship fights were supposed to be waiting down the line for him but he was diagnosed with epilepsy....and it was game over.

Spencer Oliver, Ibeabuchi (injured mind), Joshua.
Re: Fighters who's careers was ruined by injurys
Did Isreal Vasquez have to retire because his nose was badly smashed by Marquez?
Re: Fighters who's careers was ruined by injurys
I think he was headed that way anyway. He's had a long and hard career and he was starting to show signs of serious decline, not to mention his face was starting to fall apart. I think he'd had several operations on detached retinas, which is no real surprise.

kevin had to stop boxing because of a bad back.or dodgy shoulder. One of the two. Kevin and his brother danny Lear were both top fighters.seen danny a few times over the years but nothing of Kev.Sklar wrote:Not sure as I didn't know him but there are not many in this country who had the potential of Gomez. Do you see Steve Roberts about, Johnny? He was a cracking fighter amateur and pro.johnnygreaves wrote:kevin had to stop boxing because of a bad back.or dodgy shoulder. One of the two. Danny Hunt. Very good boxer. Lost to lee meager in a very good and close fight for the English title. Hampered by cuts.

Yes was commonwealth gold medalist for Pakistan. If I recall right he pulled out halfway through his fight. His corner couldn't believe he wanted to quit and subsequently never worked with him again.rio wrote:Anyone remember heilder ali? Re: Fighters who's careers was ruined by injurys
Lee McAllister had a lot of long lay offs before retiring, he was a good fighter,he put in a great effort against a prime John Murray and then got injured in a European title fight against Shafikov,he could have been in more big fights if he was just able to get some momentum going, still he was 2 weight Commonwealth champ
Re: Fighters who's careers was ruined by injurys
Dean Francis sticks out for me. He was British and European champion, was on a great run of form and with his jab and combinations (serious power in left hook) looked a certain world champion for me

Re: Fighters who's careers was ruined by injurys
Paul Williams paralyzed in motorcycle accident, also Egbefumere Albert , never heard of him? Well he got $1 million for a hand injury substained in a car crash , he was a cruiserweight from Nigeria who boxed in Canada. I don't know of many cruisers that would of earned a million in their careers, but thats what he got in lost earnings.
The insurers appealed but lost, oddly they said that Mr Albert was exaggerating his injury, and at the time Albert was on bail for a lottery telemarketing scam as well, i'm also pretty sure i got an email from him claiming to be a Nigerian prince who needed to have my bank details so i could get a lot of money

You mean the Eubank that Benn could not drop but actually did drop in the first fight. Just because Eubank said it was a slip does not make it so. A punch landed behind the ear and he hit the deck.
