100s really. a lot of ABA champs or Olmpic reps turn pro, very few make it. You could probably write 2 or 300 names if you really stopped to think about it. Go on the ABAE website and look on the list of champions from each year. Sobering really.

229 gold medals given out in the olympic boxing, only 38 world title winners from that, 28 of them since 1976. Since a lot of winners were from the old eastern block or Cuba, its not such a shocking stat in some ways.

Terry Spinks won gold in 1956, his title as a pro was British feather. So would that be called failing at pro boxing?
DeGale looks our best hope to be the first British gold medalist to win a world title.

Also who was the big punching amateur that had a few pro fights, but had to retire because of scan or eye problems. He was mentioned in a thread before, but can't think of his name.

At all ages and weights etc. how many national amateur champions are there each year ? - there must be hundreds.

Over a 10 year period the number will be thousands, and only a very small number of those will become top pros (ie. British title level or above).

There are also a lot of successful juniors who don't have the same success as seniors, let alone as a pro.

Tommy Peacock, Denny Lear, Darren Macarrick and as someone else mentioned Mark Ramsey and Paul Denton were excellent amateurs and very smooth boxers and powerful punchers.

This is a great post reguarding Spinks Ian. Normally when a fighter retires they gain more appreciation and plaudits years after they hung up the gloves, paradoxically I think Spinks was probably lauded more in his pomp as back then the British title was seen as THE BELT to have round your waist and if you were lucky enough youd earn a few quid challenging for euro or world titles. London was very much the epicentre of boxing in britain and to cap it all Spinks was a genuine cockney. Imo I would look back and think Terry neither over nor under achieved but had an ok career.

My mate boxed Todd. He was outstanding in the early 90's. Moved on to other things, though.

Peacock was ruined by a rampant Hatton wasn't he,love watching the end of that fight.
Was so impressed by McCarrick's destruction of my mate Adrian Stone in the ABA's,Darren turned pro in the USA and is back here involved with the AM's again apparently.
Craig Dermody is the one that still annoys me,the guy was so talented and from a great camp too.

Bradley Welsh was a better amateur than pro, Mark Elliott as well.

Kevin evans made numerous commonwealth games yet never turned pro. Chris lawson Olympic box offs yet was a pro gatekeeper. More recently Neil Perkins could be one too

Think he moved to Glasgow but got caught up in the gang thing that was big around Moss Side years ago.
