Although on the flip side, Floyd and Manny would have also been bigger stars in the 90's than they are now..... Boxing was bigger in the 90's in general. So I think if you placed Manny and Floyd in 1999, it would have done better than Trinidad vs DLH.

In saying that, there are certain fighters that you can put in with anyone and you know it would sell like hotcakes. The two biggest of these, IMO, were Tyson and Oscar. Tyson's comeback generated Millions - even post the intrigue of his first fight and before Bruno he was still making a fortune. With Oscar, lets not forget he was the the biggest PPV fighter until Floyd vs Alvarez - but when he fought Mayweather it was HE who was the star, he was the reason why 24/7 started. Floyd was big, but not in Oscar's league in terms of PPV revenue. Floyd still (IMO) needs a big name fighter in the opposite to do well in the PPV's. He had one in Saul, he has one
Manny - he doesn't talk too much about the buy rate vs Guerrero.

I still think the reason why Floyd is the biggest name in boxing and gets these record buys is because of the opponent. I think Floyd vs someone like Bradley Skeete would bomb.... whereas Oscar fought the odd lesser fight - like that Carpentier guy and still made a fortune from it.

I don't think Floyd is as big or has the cross over appeal that he thinks he does. Yes, he is a huge star but not in Tyson or Oscar's league.

Floyd is the most famous boxer on the planet. In their pomp, Tyson and Ali were among the most famous MEN on the planet. Floyd's whole persona is very much driven by the fame obsessed, materialistic society that we live in today. He actually lacks personality from what I have seen, hence the whole 'look at me, I am rich' charade. The man is tedious when he speaks etc. His style in the ring, whilst appreciated massively by the likes of us, boxing fans, is hardly the sort of style that attracts the casual. Ali and Tyson by comparison had a much better story, had far more about them as people and of course, they both had styles that appeal to the wider audience ( Tyson especially )

Floyd is lucky there isn't many big name fighters around right now. He has manipulated himself into a standing he would not have been close to had it been any other era.
