Met Tony Laing at a few shows as he trains white collar boxers, makes me wonder if dementia is hereditary as i certainly think Tony also seems a little shopworn in terms of mental health.

I don't think his dementia is due to boxing, I really don't. His overuse of the weed is what caused this.

How did he go from beating a still 'living' Roberto Duran to being KOd by the mighty Fred Hutchings in his next fight?

He might have been a great fighter with a bit more dedication.

A years inactivity 'celebrating' the Duran win didn't help and Hutchings was a world rated LIGHT MIDDLE.

Strange fight for Laing to take really, I've never seen it (can't find any footage either) but I remember reading at the time it was really bad knockout.

I've never quite understood the Hutchings fight, as Laing was a welter against a career Lightmiddle and there was an 8lb weight difference at the weigh in.
Why did this fight take place?

That's a fair point.

He was obviously still dining out on beating a living legend & like you & the next poster state, it was a strange fight to take, thinking about it.

His management team must have had some big plans for him at 154, but obviously, it was not to be.

Stupid fight really, Hutchings was pretty unremarkable but he'd be active, he was world rated AND as you say the naturally bigger man (he'd won the California State MIDDLE WEIGHT title two fights before Laing) Laing's only previous fight at 11st was his bizarre loss to Reg Ford, when Laing basically f*cked about for ten rounds, then vaulted over the ropes and the end and sprinted back to the changing rooms.

I understood Laing fell off a balcony and thought this rather than boxing or drug use caused his present condition. I hope he is being well looked after.

Nina La Rocca also outscored him in a stinker. As for Duran, he was using Kirk as a loosener for a mouthwatering clash with Tony Ayala Junior (who has just died) and came in out of shape. That was his problem. Kirk ouboxed and outscored the great Hands of Stone and nobody can take that away from him.

Ayala was an animal in and out of the ring, no sympathy for his early demise

He's only 60, very rare for anyone to get it that young. Could have been boxing, weed or the balcony fall mentioned by others but I doubt it came on completely naturally.

It's not actually as rare as you'd think, FTD dementia is one of the less common types of dementia but it's the cause of most dementia in under 65s. About 5% of Dementia sufferers are under 65.

Oh, he was a prize one jerk. still, must have been a good fighter if he beat up Pipo Cuevas as a 14 year old, when Pipo was a world champ (as was reported)

Remember the fight against Yuri boy Campas when he came back, cracking fight. Although he lost, it showed that 16 years previously, he would have massacred Campas.

Still, I do feel the women of the planet are much safer now.

It really isn't that rare at all, Expe. My mates dad is in a dementia home and I've visited with him several times. There are loads under 60 there, the youngest is barely into his 50's.

My mrs is a nurse and she tells me that some dementia sufferers can have dementia for many years and get by, living in their routine and own home. Take them out of their routine and surroundings such as a hospital it can become more apparent. They can get confused easily and star tto talk jibberish and often talk about old times.

I wonder if Kirk has many visitors, or is upto taking visitors.

I remember a guy who was a boxer in hospital and my wife intorduced me to him. I put up a thread a few years ago about him. I found his record and he was over the moon when I talked about his fights he had. He died in hospital at a good old age but it was nice to chat to the old guy.

Nice one Mimmy. It's good that you took the time out for him and made him smile; he might of had no-one i.e friends or family. There's manny elderly people that are in a nursing home or living alone dying of lonelyness. I know one bloke a few doors down who's wife died years ago and not one person visits; his kids have moved away to Oz. He only hears from them on Xmass or Birthdays. Very sad. We should all make an effort with them. Many have lived amazing lives, with plenty of stories to tell.
