i reckon you're more likely to get messed up in boxing. Bigger gloves for a start. In MMA chances are you get KO'd by the big shots and stopped. In boxing you can get hit all night - which might actually be more dangerous.

In response to Keith's opener - I've never been a fan that follows the sport to "see someone get put on his arse" which I've known people say that's all that people want to see. I do not buy into that mentality in any way whatsoever. I like the back-stories, the characters, the build-up, the way fights unfold. I like to admire skill, stamina, technique, bravery. If these kind of attributes are in evidence then I don't care if I don't see a KO on the bill.
i'm sure you're right about there being more damage in boxing (brain) than mma but there's something that makes me cringe a bit when i see knees to the head like in muay thai .

I don't care, I just do.

Why do people like anything?
Quite simply, we do things because we want to, whether consciously or sub-consciously. Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs discusses the idea of personality, which is linked to why we do the things we do. However, I would argue that Maslow assumes that we actually have a self or a personality and that in itself can be argued at length.

A question for you Horse. Why do you post your top 30 every month?

I agree with you mate - it is kind of chilling! Don't quote me on what I said by the way - I know nowt! - that is just a theory that I read somewhere, which I thought made some sort of sense.

There used to be a British MMA fighter from somewhere near me - Bishop Auckland I think. Buzz Berry is his name. He was beating everybody before him and might have even had a go in the States (UFC), but he ended up with a metal-plate in his head and having to retire from a blow to the head - and that's a guy who was pretty proficient at it!

I have 4 kids (soon to be 5). I have put my two boys into boxing but would you want your child to get into MMA? I take your point. Far too brutal and less skill involved than boxing.

Utter tripe! MMA atheletes are every bit as skilled as boxers. To say otherwise shows that you clearly know nothing about MMA. MMA is not my thing, I am a boxing fan- but I don't feel the need to denigrate it at every turn and can recognise that the elite MMA fighters are every bit as skilled as elite boxers.

MMA has a far more developed and open culture towards the latest sports science and training methods than boxing does which is generally quite behind the times.

As for MMA being more brutal? they don't have 8 counts in MMA where a fighter gets time to briefly recovered and then fired back in to fight. I would suggest that an MMA fighter would take one hell of a lot less head shots in his career than a boxer as well.

I totally agree with that sentiment. Why do boxing people tend to denigrate UFC - the idea there is less skill involved is crazy - many of the top guys will know several disciplines, whilst excelling at one in particular. Some of the ground work is extremely skilled, although the striking tends to be less impressive as guys cannot put their full leverage into punches, for fear of taking a kick or knee, or getting taken down and submitted.

I think it's a great sport - and some of the guys are incredible athletes too - Shane Jon Jones might not return because he was phenomenon.

You have no idea? I'll tell you what I think. The fact that it is a list is perhaps the biggest indication. I think it points towards a need for order and structure in your life. I think lists, plans and organisation are part of your every day life. I think you feel that everything should be in it's place. I would imagine your room is tidy and you wash your hands a lot. You find it difficult to make new friends and find social situations with strangers very stressful. Despite that, I think you crave acceptance and would dearly like to be involved in a long term relationship, but the restrictions that your personality puts on you, makes that very difficult.

That's what I get from it anyway.

What do you mean, father? Am I your father? If your mother is aged 35-55 and used to go clubbing in Sunderland, then there's a very good possibility of that.

I'm close with the personality profile aren't I Horse?

Mate shut your noise. I wasn't being detrimental to MMA! Not one bit! I just happen to think that there is more skill involved in our sport! I respect any man who has the guts to fight wether it be in an octagon, boxing ring or a frickin taxi rank! And yeah you are correct I don't really know anything about MMA I just give my opinion.

Great deal of skill in MMA, they need to be able to fight on the ground, standing up, deal with kicks as well as punches, they'll likely get a lot less head trauma in MMA than boxing as well
Yeah MMA is highly skilled. Their boxing on the whole is quite poor but Kickboxing/Muay Thai/BJJ/Wrestling etc is in some cases outstanding. You can't watch someone like Anderson Silva or Conor McGregor and say their skill level is less.

The arguments over your ratings involve people from all over the UK, last for days and blow over just before you post the new ratings :OhYes:
