It's actually a brilliant move by Mayweather. I don't believe him when he says he's going to retire 49-0. It's not coherent with his character to simply tie Rocky Marciano's lauded undefeated record--I know Floyd wants to break it. I think he's setting up a bidding war between HBO and Showtime for the PPV rights to his real last hurrah. Fighting Berto on CBS sets up a lucrative potential 50-0 retirement because 1) he will make things right with consumers by giving them a free fight to make up for the $100 Pacquiao PPV dud, and 2) he will give himself a strong chance to score an exciting knockout.

Pretty smart.

I agree, he's having a nothing fight on free to air, where he can sell the idea of 'one more for the road' post fight, or leave 'em begging for more.

If Floyd never had a big fight again, he's already done plenty with his career, who else is he going to beat that will really enhance it.

There's nobody at 147 who is really seen as much of a challenge, Kell Brook - maybe, but really he's probably going to just get completely outboxed by Mayweather, same as everybody else is. After the fight, people will say - with some justification - he's unproven.

Berto isn't a bad fighter. He's not top 10 WW but he's easily top 20.

Difference is Pacquiao was coming off of a loss. If Floyd was coming off a loss, Berto would be perfect. And as of right now Algeri > Berto. Algeri was still undefeated when he fought Pacquiao and did better than Alexander against Khan. Berto couldn't even beat Karras

His hatred of Floyd and rededication under Hunter should make it interesting at least. I would have preferred Brook or Thurman or Bradley. Hopefully it is more competitive than Floyd's last fight.

Let's see if I can help you understand. I'm complaining because I don't think Berto is deserving of a fight nor do I think he'll be remotely competitive. I believe he is Mayweather's worst opponent is roughly a decade, and in my view there are several other realistic candidates who would very likely give Mayweather a tougher fight and have accomplished more over the last few years than Berto, who was stopped only a few fights ago by Soto Karass, has.

Floyd is a great fighter and has repeatedly beaten top opposition, so I can give him a pass for dropping his level of competition so drastically, but a fight with such a poor opponent by his standards is still disappointing, I won't be looking forward to it, and I think it's fair to mention this.

Also, are some people still trying to pass Lopez off as a top win? Lopez has been a punching bag against all his top 147-154 opponents other than Ortiz and his knockdown suffering struggle with faded fringe contender Mike Arnaoutis leads me to believe that he's been past his best for a while.

Mayweather will get criticised for a weak opponent, he is p4p no1 after all.

Why not? He's the ring champion there. It's stupid that he gets to defend the 154lb title against Maidana at 147 but when Lara comes into play, he doesn't fight at 154.

Nahh, if that was to happen i think the stations would demand for floyd to fight someone who could posses a threat to him. And void want do that.
