The Klitschko fight should have ended the idea he had a weak chin. But he was careless against the more basic challengers and that will probably cost his long term reputation.

Pat Cowdell wasn't chinny, though after approximately 90 seconds with nelson you could be forgiven for thinking so.

Depends what you consider early, for me the 5th is more middle rounds in a 12 rounder.

Odd stoppage that one, not sure if the corner were coming in to stop the fight or complain about Jones hitting after the bell.

Marlon was a very tough and skilled boxer and it shows the sheer power of Hearns who broke Starlings jaw while sparring with 18oz gloves on.

Strange turn of events for the unbeaten Molinares after that fight, he had a breakdown, was knocked out twice by nobodies (one making their debut) and then retired aged just 24.

Huge punch that "KO'd" Starling but it was [marginally] after the bell.

I think read Molinares suffered badly from depression after that fight and gave up the WBA title.

The fight is interesting for two things - The first is that Starling clearly has no idea he was knocked out, that's how hard he was hit. He thought he hurt his leg (he did). The post-fight interview is priceless. I like Starling, he was a class act in and out the ring. Very talented.

The second is that the WBA upheld the result as a legit knockout win for Tomas, only Larry Hazzard and the NJACB ruled it to a NC (after initially agreeing with the referee that the punch was thrown a fraction before the bell and landed just after.


You could start another thread with "fighters who were never the same after X fight".

Starling was a genius in the ring, he's not been able to keep his money , was working as a washer upper in a cafe not so long ago. But whenever I see a article on him they say he is very open with fans and always signing stuff etc.
Its a shame he can't get back in the game somehow to get him some pay back.

I was just re-watching some of his fights, funny seeing Freddie Roach lurking in the background with a horrendous mullet.

I scanned an old Moochie interview a few years ago for Tel and Glyn, think I've still got it online somewhere.

KO was one hell of a good magazine. They printed transcripts of phone interviews with Vinny Paz and Greg Haugen - they were comedy gold.

Wasn't Nelson more of a victim of the usual continental screw job? Will have to have another look at those early fights.
