Yeah thats gonna be action packed,a lot of power from both guys going into that one
Looks good on paper paddy power odds Ruiz 4/6 Ceja 6/5 so very close. Don't know much about Ruiz is he any good ? If he has an aggressive style about him we're in for a treat.
Don't forget Ceja was 20 years old when he fought McDonnell in his backyard and pushed him all the way. After the fight I was convinced he would win a world title at some point. Wonder if he is still with Nacho Beristan.

Counter-puncher wrote:not sure how this one is going to turn out. i think if Santa Cruz shows any ability to get punches off early on, we'll see a lot of mauling and spoiling from Mares. if Santa Cruz isn't that threatening i think Mares will try to pot-shot a bit from the outside; I don't see Mares trying to exchange on the inside, either way.
Great analysis. I personally don't know what Mares has left. Since Gonzo did him he's looked a completely different fighter. LSC hasn't got the power to do anything like that job but is as Naandrew says a fecking huge drainer & may just be too strong & roll right over Abner.
In his pre-Gonzo form (didn't he change trainers before that fight? He was with Espinoza all the time he was coming up/winning bantam titles...) I'd've gone--pretty confidently--for Mares to box LSC's ears off, just 'cos Cruz's opposition has been garbage squared & I have no idea exactly how good the boy actually is. With today's Mares, I dunno. I just... Dunno.
It's an odd one, & wouldn't surprise me too much to see a draw or a controversial ending with Mares not looking as good as he used to & LSC giving a sort of mediocre performance as well & after the dust settles, we all still sit around going "That Santa Cruz, is he any good then? & Mares, is he shot or what?"
The support bout will show whether or not Ceja belongs at an elite level, Ruiz took the best Kameda brother (the kiddie who used to be thought of as the best Kameda brother, anyway) close, though he was outhustled. Ruiz is big at the weight, I'm sure, & can whack though he's more heavy-handed than dynamite.
Two really goddamn intriguing fights, at least one (the support fight) with the potential to be a proper hardcore war.

He may well have had too much taken out of him, but I'm going to predict Mares to get the victory on points

You got BT sports? I was thinking of getting it but another 20 quid a month on top of everything else is just a step too far. Do you think it'll be on YouTube tomorrow?

Thank you

I was hoping BN would pick it up, I imagine it'll be better than the Mosely bout.

I wouldnt be surprised if this is the first time Santa Cruz has headlined a card, ive been telling myself for years that LSC is the most underated fighter in boxing but his last few performances have been ordinary,i just hope he raises his game tonight because i know Mares hasnt been spectacular but i know he'll step his game up a level, but Leo has to prove he can do that

Beautiful left hook from Ruiz to drop Ceja in the third round.

The undercard fight was awesomesauce, I enjoyed the main event but whilst it was entertaining its earnest scrabbling (watched the replay over my breakfast, so I admit it lacked the white-knuckle immediacy of watching live) never made me once doubt the outcome; Mares has never been a hitter a at any weight & just wasn't going to win fighting that fight. Besides, Santa Cruz looked like a fecking welterweight, so Abner's kamikaze-style assaults early on didn't have me punching kittens as much as the announcing crew.
Good fight. Mares is still... Mares, but rather less so.
Santa Cruz is going to be difficult to beat until he fights someone remotely the same in-ring size as him, but will be kept away from anyone truly slick (Loma/Rigo would toy with him I'm sure, barring tiring versus the huge lump).
Ruiz vs Ceja was fecking brilliant though, knife-edge stuff, I could see the left hook that finished Ruiz coming from about halfway through the first round but Hugo's own short hook counter very nearly disengaged Ceja's brain for the night. Classic shoot-out, that one.
Good card. More Mexican lighter weight fighters please PBC, even when subjected to cynical matchmaking constraints at least it looks good as a spectacle.
PS: Isn't Hugo the spitting image of his dad? & also, he gets knocked down the same way, as well. Eerie. I hope (for their sakes) he doesn't end up having quite so many unsuccessful challenges as his dad though.

Ceja: balls of steel to see out that knockdown & follow up assault then come back like that.

What a great fight; one of the best I've seen in a while.
It told us a bit more about Santa Cruz. His performance seemed to match the step up in competition.

Has ceja split with nacho? He looked a little flat there but great finish and a lot better survival instincts than Ruiz.

Yeah, no Nacho in the corner... But he did bloody well to come back from that.
