in my opinion foreman had power, but not a
solid boxing basis. for example his footwork,
starting with his very close stance and of course
his total lack of defense. i have not seen anybody
ever being angry enough to power himself out for
several rounds on a stationary target as he did in
zaire.
when you listen to his commentating it sometimes
is necessary to remind yourself of this being one
of the greatest boxers ever, because from what he
says you couldn't tell. i think foreman had the power
and basic talent of a boxer, but in a certain way not
the mind. he was outclassed in zaire, than struggled
reviving his career and finally his mind found a way
out by the "calling".
i do not see him having much of a chance against a
young larry who was superior in all departments apart
of power.
my explanation for his easy game with frazier is that
by coincidence george had the perfect timing for
everything joe did, always finding the exact split second
of an opening.
i do rate foreman high, but still think many other people
overrate him and one must concede that the comeback
was against no ATG opposition. what made it spectacular
was his age and his name, nothing else. axel schultz had
no business being a contender and still won the fight.
btw i think foreman was treated unfairly in zaire. he was
up at ten and the round was over. this was a premature
stoppage. wouldn't have changed anything though if they
had gone another two. george was doomed after seeing
ali could take all he had to offer.
