Just seen a picture posted on Twitter Andrew selby fighting 30th of October in newport
Sounds nice the money and the traveling but showcasing your talents for the most part in front of 20 people in and eastern block gymnasium is hardly the stuff dreams are made of. He has boxed at a home Olympics and probably thought he couldn't be bothered with the whole rigmarole of qualifying for rio only to lose a close decision in the second round or something. Time to go pro.bripez wrote:Good luck to the lad, but there isn't much dough around at the very light weight divisions - I would have thought he wouldn't get the kind of money he is one now (tax free lottery money, free travel, accommodation, food, training etc - not to mention no manager, promoter or trainer to pay).
There are few good lads around his weight domestically - Satchel, Yafai and Butler - but I agree that at his age and experience it would be good if he was fast tracked to that level and beyond rather than pissing about knocking over much lower level opposition.
Wasn't this the fella at the opening ceremony at London 2012 wearing his sunglasses in the dark and sporting a rather dodgy 'tache ?

He looks a bit tasty for a debutant.PredatorHayds wrote:What a debut. He nearly went 12 with Onesongchaigym.
Looks like they are going to move him along quick.ShadrachSimmo wrote:He looks a bit tasty for a debutant.PredatorHayds wrote:What a debut. He nearly went 12 with Onesongchaigym.
Craig Kennedy's fighting another Tanzanian in the main event. Probably had a Tanzanian agent/manager get in touch with them offering fighters they have available. Kennedy said in an interview they hadn't been able to find any footage of his opponent, no height, reach or weights listed on his record either, there should be footage of Selby's opponent from his fight in Thailand though. I would guess that they went for two Tanzanians to save costs, bring them over on the same flight, share a hotel room and transport, same cornerman for both will save them a few quid. Selby's opponent was always likely to be foreign because of the weight he's at and they offered the fight to a few domestic opponents for Kennedy who all turned it down, so had to look further afield for an opponent.bripez wrote:I can't comment on the quality of the opponent, but where on earth did the promoter come up with this guy?
All but 2 of his fights have been in Tanzania - I genuinely do not even know where Tanzania is.
How does the promoter find them and how do they asses the quality control?
Yeah I get all that, however how can the promoter be sure of the level of quality of opponent?expe wrote:Craig Kennedy's fighting another Tanzanian in the main event. If they aren't given footage and can't find any then I'd guess they'd just have to go off boxrec and what the agent tells them, like the days before the internet.bripez wrote:Yeah I get all that, however how can the promoter be sure of the level of quality of opponent?expe wrote:Craig Kennedy's fighting another Tanzanian in the main event. The guy could be brilliant or rubbish - either way the promoter should surely know.
