Shannon O’Connell could be heading to the Big Apple

Shannon “Shotgun’’ O’Connell is one step from showcasing her skills inside boxing’s most famous ring.

The WBC silver bantamweight champion expects to hear within days if she will defend her title at New York’s Madison Square Garden, in March, in a bout that would expose her to a world audience.

Bob Arum watched O’Connell claim the vacant WBO Asian Pacific super-bantamweight title by unanimously outpointing the previously undefeated Argentinian Laura Griffa, in Auckland, last month.

Arum immediately contacted O’Connell’s manager with an offer for her to fight at the Mecca of boxing where the likes of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Sugar Ray Robinson, Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson became the best known fighters on the planet.
