First fight that comes to mind is Bruno against Witherspoon, only because it was my first experience of a big fight and I was still riding around on a bike with stabilisers, so it made an impression on me.
I'm surprised to see a lot of fights mentioned on this thread where Brits lost to fellow Brits. I know it's not a logical interpretation of the thread title, but I'm an 80's child, a British world champion was a huge deal, and I don't recall a title fight between two Brits in my lifetime until Benn-Eubank. So a Brit challenger was invariably up against someone from a different country.
Having said that, Ingle against Hamed is one that really had me choked up.
Owen v Pintor
Buchanan v Duran
Watt v Arguello
Andries v Hearns has been mentioned, but I would take his first effort against Harding over that performance.
Gary Jacobs was similarly overmatched against Sweat-Pea, but also fought bravely. Ditto Sibson against Hagler, McDonnell against Nelson
John Conteh v Saad Muhammad
Bugner v Ali
