Fury rambling on about the devil coming and all that other stuff won't do him any favours or earn him many lucrative contracts or tv awards/publicity that could earn him a load more lucrative contracts. Talking shite in public is a good way to miss out on a lot of opportunities.

Okay enough of this. Mo Farah and Andy Murray can claim to be amongst the best British sportsmen of all time and their sports have way more competition than the current heavyweight division. Let's not forget before Fury won the division was considered the worst of all time. Joshua is in most people's top 10 whilst he is still a novice. Great win by Fury but it certainly doesn't put him at the top.

And surely people get bored of banging on about personality year after year. You want personality then watch a soap opera. It's obviously sporting achievement of the year and whilst Fury is well worthy of a shortlist spot, boxing a clever but boring 12 rounds against a 39 year old who threw about 8 right hands on PPV isn't winning. It is actually whatever the people who vote want it to be. Call it what you want - Personality, person, achievement, character etc, is all immaterial as it is voted for by the people and they will all interpret it how they want.

On this thread, some have said they think it is all about personality and some have said achievement and they will vote accordingly. So it is not "obviously" anything.

This & Floyd vs. Pac this year must have been a real slap in the face to the casual audience. Personally I'd put DeGale's achievements this year over Fury any day of the week but because he just gets on with things in the ring he's not got the spotlight.

I don't think anyone with more than one, maybe two brain cells actually takes the BBC award seriously.

I really disagree when people have a go at "horsey" people winning it - if they have won their equivalent of the world championship - then why not?

It's bloody solid and incredibly brave to have that much control over an animal.

Its a bit like saying "all Kelly Holmes did was run around a track twice, what is the significance of that".

I can see more logic for the criticism if a flat racing jockey won it - they are nutters also, but less skill than show jumpers if you ask me.

I would say a horsey "world champion" is of equal standing to Lewis Hamilton in which the machine is a big issue. All f1 drives are really talented, but I would say the vast majority on the grid would come at least second to Hamilton overall if they were in Rosberg's car.

Disagree with De Gale. Boxing wise I'd put Mcdonnell ahead of him as I rate his two wins over Kameda higher than DeGale over Dirrell and Bute.

I was about to say the same thing. It's not discrimination due to his background (travellers are not a race). It's outrage at the political incorrectness of what he said. Virtually everyone will think what he has said is wrong shouldn't come into it.

Staying stupid things doesn't lessen sporting achievement. I don't think he shouldn't have said anything he has said, the media should issue a rebuttal pointing out how he is wrong about it and then get on with assessing what he has done in the boxing ring.

He said Jessica Ennis has achieved great things and looks bang tidy - I say that all the time. He said he thinks women belong in the kitchen but if they want to box who is he to dictate what they are allowed to do - take a look at him and his wife together does it look like she's lacking empowerment?

You know, I feel genuinely embarrassed reading comments from people like you, it's sad that because he's a boxer you'll let him say and do what he likes without the criticism it deserves. It isn't about having opinions, no one really gives a fornicate what most people think, he's entitled to hold those views, but he isn't entitled to have those views put in the paper and be immune from the criticism it deserves, no one is, the fact you think he deserves to be immune says quite a lot about you. Would you be saying the same thing about radical Islamists? Are their views okay to be put in the paper and not be criticised? After all it's their interpretation of their religion just like Fury's. He didn't make any hateful comments?
