he was one of the dumbest boxers of his generation. he shouldve fought the best opponents, when he was prime. imagine he would have pushed for boxing prime dariusz, prime calzaghe, prime eubank, rematch with prime hopkins. roy would have beat every single one of them and had an super impressiv record and than when you're prime starts fading, you simply retire.
Come on. One by one:
- yes, he should've fought Dariusz, but DM was as reluctant to make the fight as RJJ. Sure, it would look better if RJJ would "confirm" his belts by directly outpointing DM (most probable score IMO) rather than getting DM stripped by political decisions... but as said, you need two to tango.
- Calzaghe stayed safely at 168 for ages, and moved to 175 only to fight past-prime Hopkins and RJJ.
- he won with Hopkins clearly... then he moved to 175 while Hopkins stayed at 160... on top of this it took Hopkins some time to become great star... who remembers he still entered the fight with Trinidad (2001) as 3-1 underdog?
- I admit I was not following possible fight with Eubank, so if anyone has any comment here, they are welcome.
you make some good points
yeah dm was very difficult himself, not wanting to leave germany etc. you right.
also calzaghe stayed to long at sm, but i guess would have roy pushed more for this fight, than it would have been made, even as the a side, you have sometimes to push for one fight and prime calzaghe would have been a great opponent.
as far as hopkins goes, when hopkins became a star by beating tito and oscar, hopkins wanted to move up and said to roy, lets make the fight 50/50 in terms of money, roy said no, roy answered 60/40 and fight and catch weight etc never happened and it should have happened. roy should have said yes, not taking the fight because of a 10 % difference is just laughable, on top, roy would have beat hopkins again and it would have looked great on resume beating 2 prime atg like cal and hop.

I never thought we would be here talking of Roy like this it seems surreal,I hold him in such high regard he's one of a very few elite that rarely if ever gets any criticism for me.
But over the last number of years I've seen some interviews that struck me as very off, ok being Roy he gets passes and lots of them and I'm also taking into account the hype and sell factor he may be involved with as it's part of the industry so I get some of that.
Nevertheless as many blind eyes as I've turned when he seemingly [And I hope I'm wrong] appears to be approaching the stage of losing his experience and knowledge credibility then it's fast approaching the time when he maybe on the verge of becoming seriously mocked and frowned upon, the word of Roy Jones may not be worth it's weight if he keeps up this foolishness.
To say he should have retired long ago is without question an understatement although putting Russia on part of the pro boxing map was admirable, but his career went sour a very long time ago and when die hard Jones fans like myself start chirping on at how bad it is then I think Roy should take some notice.

He should fight James Toney with it written in the contract that the winner must retire.
I like that concept.
But even better would be that the contract stipulates they both retire.

Sounds like Roy is having second thoughts about continuing >>>
"Everything was good [in camp], it was top notch. Because of my schedule now, I don't have the luxury of staying in one place for eight to ten weeks like I used to do [for training camp]. Meaning that, with your life changing in every way, you don't have the time to dedicate full attention to it like you want to do. However, if it were a title fight, we would have made a few changes," Jones said.
"But no excuses, everything was good enough. I thought I was in superior shape. Sometimes when you get older, the body doesn't hold up. That's just how it turns out. I was happy with everything. I was happy with the fans who turned out. I was happy with everything leading up to the fight. The only thing that I wasn't happy with was the outcome.
"I look forward to being in the sport in one way or the other, maybe not so much in the ring and outside the ring but we'll see."

He had beaten about half a dozen tomato cans in a row and none of those wins were good enough to retire on. The problem for all these over the hill one time top fighters is while they are winning there is no reason to retire but they refuse to go out on a loss either.

Roy Jones Jr. Admits Being Tempted To Avenge KO Loss
Roy Jones Jr. is not paying attention to the critics who are calling on him to retire from the ring.
On November 12th, Jones' eight fight win streak was snapped when Enzo Maccarinelli knocked him out in brutal fashion in the fourth round of their contest in Moscow, Russia.
Jones, 46-years-old, is not choosing to retire just yet. He is leaving the door open to fight once again and that includes a rematch with Maccarinelli.
"Every time I lose a fight, I want to hold a rematch. I hate to lose. I have no fear. I am willing to fight any boxer. But it all depends on my family and on my health."

Might be time you started listening to your family and respecting your health Roy.

How about the write in the contract that both must retire? That would be ideal.
