Tuan_Jim wrote:Good thread, and a much needed counter balance to the disturbing 'duh, Tyson Fury big, he beat everyone in history, all on duh same night' school of thought.
In terms of pure talent he is pretty poor, but he has size and a fearless winner's mentality on his side.
Some of the men named in this thread, such as Bruce Seldon, had fine boxing skills, but were hindered by psychological problems.
On the other hand John Ruiz, Nikolay Valuev, Chagaev, Briggs, Lyakovic, Peter, Wilder, Stiverne, Maskaev, Rahman form a pantheon of incompetence. Fury is for the most part better than them.
I'd agree with that, well and succinctly put.

However, as Stuarty said, in fairness we've got to give Fury a chance to prove himself. Time will tell. History will be the judge.
Yes, you cannot judge him as Linear champ until he's had a chance to create a legacy.

Yeah relatively speaking, but I reckon they would both have a decent chance against Fury, whereas Seldon wouldn't.

One day boxing fans will see fury is ultra talented but looks awkward cos of his size. It reminds me of how posters would bang on about how shit froch was cos he has "no defence and was slow". Yet he still seemed to pull of impressive wins. Some fighters are just better than the sum of their parts.

I don't think Fury will successfully defend his title or win another world title.
He isnt the worst ever, but he isn't great either. He did what he had to do against a woefully bad Klitchsko.
I was delighted he won and really like him, but sadly I think it was a one off.

i was trying to think of linear champs rather than just alphabet belt holders ,i guess micheal bentt could be included if it's just belt holders

He's got great speed for a big man. He's got a good work rate. He's got great footwork and movement. He works the body well, when was the last time you saw a huge heavy do that? It was his feints and movement that prevented wlad getting anything off. I think very talented. Look at his attributes compared to similar sized heavyweights, let's take valuev as an example. To move like that and do the things he does is very impressive. He can do things the klits never could. I think people need to accept heavyweight boxing is just a totally different game nowadays. What are the other options, arreola? Andy Ruiz? I'd back fury to do wilder

Ah ok, fair enough. Tbh I lose track of who's won what, I don't pay that much attention to belts. Bring back 1 champ per division!

Totally unfair on Fury, everyone agreed before hand that Wlad was the best heavyweight on the planet, now because Tyson won people are jumping on the band wagon saying hes shit, yes Wlad looked poor in there, but give Fury some credit he said what he was going to do before hand and then went in their and done it!
I think some people just dont like him so are trying to discredit him every way.
Like him or not, Tyson won against the odds in the champions back yard and was deservedly crowned Heavyweight Champion of the world, and good on him

Good enough to bamboozle the linear champ of eleven years yes.
Who else has made wlad look so helpless (big punch withstanding)?

Yeah good argument you've put forth. Tell you what, name me a fighter over 6ft 7 that has his handspeed. Name me another approximately 18 stone that has his work rate. tell me another fighter that's made a klitchko look inept using movement predominantly IE not by catching them with a huge punch. If you can name me loads of them fair play, you obv watch a different sort of boxing

Linear champ of 11 years? 11 years ago Wladimir Klitschko had been left in tatters by Lamon Brewster. He didn't win the lineal title till he beat Povetkin in 2013. Is it 2024 already?

So you've only watched one of his fights then? Also, he was still working even in that fight with constant movement. Fury has a great work rate for a big man

Oh I see, your trolling me. Fury beat the guy that's been considered top dog for eons. Fact. Name me one other that's come close to out boxing him please? Tell me a boxer that's won more than three rounds on the spin vs wlad since his last loss

The way you talk him up I feel like we're talking about different fighters.
Genuinely can't see how someone who's watched a few of Fury's fights could come away describing him in such glowing terms but you're clearly a fan of his & fair play to you.

I dont think you can use the argument that no one has had a chanc ewith klit for 11 years. time catches up on us all im affraid. Klit was so bad in that fight. Fury deserved to win. My concern is Fury couldnt knock out a old guy who was past his best on the night.
