There was a tremendous amount of hype surrounding Ruddock going into the Tyson fight. He was scheduled to meet Tyson when Mike was champ if my memory serves me right...that got cancelled... A lot of the hype came off of the destruction of Dokes. It was one of the most chilling and lethal knockouts in Heavyweight history. His two subsequent fights were against lower grade opposition but it kept him in the public eye. The 'smash' had an incredible reputation about it - the hybrid uppercut cum hook.. My father, who was very sharp when it came to sussing fighters felt that Ruddock was overrated and that , although he had potential to be a good boxer he relied far too much on the one power punch.
Did Tyson ruin him? I think to some extent Yes ; He wasn't the same after. His timing was terrible, he further and further relied on the smash! The second fight especially was brutal and he got his jaw broke and he was generally beaten up. That must take a toll. Plus - losing two fights in a row would definitely take away confidence and mystique from a fighter!

He didn't KO him, Ruddock didn't come out for the 8th round, Jaco was behind on all cards. Ruddock claimed he had an asthma attack in the fight and couldn't continue so your post is misleading.
the question is did those 19 rds with tyson finish razor ruddock off ? yes or no ?
Yes it did. Even Ruddock admitted in an interview that he was never the same after the Tyson fights.
"the fact of the matter is that Tyson and I finished each other. Lewis fought a shell of us both; he would have never wanted to fight us when we were still fresh. It's true, he got a shell of us, and we weren?t the same after we fought each other. We fought two brutal wars. His eardrum was busted in the second fight and my jaw was broken, and we were just never the same"

Two brutal fights within 3 months! With one of the most destructive brutal punchers in boxing history.razor swaggered through it but the damage was immense.
I truly beleive tyson was never more content and confident as he was after the 2nd win.
I think although his skills were seriously neglected and declining,if not for the rape case, this fight would have propelled him to greater heights in terms of victories over foreman and holyfield but that aesthetically he would have carried on declining and with his out of ring lifestyle another douglas would have happened within 18 months vs a bowe, mercer or lewis and he would have been done

Spot on.
Like you have said, Tyson was scheduled to head North to Canada to defend his titles against Ruddock in '89, but the bout cancelled due to Tyson having to pull out through injury/problems & for some reason it never got rescheduled.
I never got why Ruddock didn't get his shot before Douglas.

I thought both men looked dreadful in those two fights.
Two big punching brutes just standing there & trading single shots.
Tyson especially looked almost unrecognisable from the Tyson of '88 & he was fortunate that Ruddock played his game & just stood & traded, because he might well have lost if Ruddock had boxed a smarter fight.

i thought tyson looked pretty good in the 1st ruddock fight (not 88 version of cpurse ) but still banging to the body great head movement and real good hand speed / tyson looked flat in the rematch and basically head hunting and trading shots with donovan ...tyson finally started going to the body in rd 10 to break ruddock down but by then it was too late,,,,,...after the first tyson fight razor ruddock told nick charles of cnn that mike tyson is very hard to hit cleanly ....

Ok Iron Mike ruined poor old Razor that's why he only won 15 of his last 18 fight's after the Iron man finished with him because if he was kept away from Mr Iron Razor would have been a legend

i never said donovan ruddock was great but the man could crack like hell many fighters avoided him / foreman/spoon /ray anis/carl willaims/bowe 2times ...bowe could have fought ruddock but foght phil brown ...a second time it was almost a done deal but bowe opted for a softer touch in pierre coetzer ...ruddock was not technically sound but he had a sledgehammer ....and a huge right upper cut ..donovans down fall was a pawing jab / not great balance/fighting in spurts / 21 power punches per rd and only 7 jabs per rd / not saying donovan was a legend but if he didnt meet tyson his career would not have flatlined from those 2 brutal beatings / and dont even talk about the tommy morrison fight ruddock was inactive looked like a bloated whale even at 243 3/4 lbs and referee mr lipton stopped the fight too soon / did you know in 1999 hbo tried getting to tua to fight razor ruddock and he said no ,....and the same for ike ibeabuchi ...but at age 35 in 1999 ruddock was way past it and was being handled by mike acrie who had him fighting stiff and shot fighters like jose ribalta and ruddocks career never did go anywere ....he got himself in great shape at 241 lbs to fight egerton marcus for the canadien title and he fuked egerton badly in rd 10 with a devistating right uppercut / marcus had to be taken away on a stretcher .....was ruddock great = nope but the man could crack like a mother fuker /

badkatt wrote:did those 19 rds against mike tyson ruin donovan razor ruddock ?
No...their 1st fight was stopped prematurely... The 2nd fight was a slow, slogging affair like Tyson's James Smith and Tony Tucker fights... Ruddock wasn't badly beaten up in either fight...like say George Foreman was in the Alex Stewart fight. Tyson was too fast for him and could see everything Ruddock threw.
Ruddock was very easy to hit.. He would have been knocked out a lot more often, but he didn't face guys like Mercer, McCall, or Tua. He faced 13 straight tomato cans after the Morrison fight.. I thought that fight was stopped prematurely.. I can't believe he lost to Morrison.

He probably ruined any chance to have kids with that ruthless assault to the balls. Tyson should have more than a handful of DQ's.

Razor was very very good. He put on a great display against Tyson and no doubt the fights took effect on both guys. He looked good until and dubious stoppage against Tommy. Did it have effect on him, yes. Was it the only thing that ruined his career , I'd say no.
