Least known UK/Irish world champs

Ok I got a really left field one..... Although he's successful and fairly well known - Mikkel Kessler.... He has an English mother. Not a lot of people know that....

I was talking about boxing with a group of 18/19 year olds the other week in the pub & I mentioned Loughran & they never heard of him, never heard of Weird either for that matter.

Good to hear. He was a proper warrior who didn't get his true props and was very exciting. He ko'd Jake Matlala in 10.

Perhaps Audley Harrison as a World champion - obviously known, but not many will know of him as a world champion.

Tony was never WBF he was WBU Original.... He lost it Matthew Barney so that makes Barney world champ

Hodgkinson WBC champ in the 90s wasn't following the sport then only aware of him when talking to a friend about WBC champs from UK.

Javid khaliq defended Ibo title 7 times, then retired cause of poor promotion and little pay. Was rated in top 10 welterweight by ring magazine.
He was called out by verrron forest after he beat Shane Mosley. He was a cabbi while fighting pro just to support his family. He use to get paied more by being a cabbi then to fight .

He owns his own gym now, there also a artical on how he came in a gym and carl frotch saw his title and that motivated him. He also became pro at 27 so he was getting older retired around 2005. Just before amir khan came to the scene, most people think amir khan was the first British pakistani champion.

I think most people never even heard of this guy lol so there for I win

Everyone on here know about his career and he was on Sky god knows how many times. Mismanaged, maybe, but not unknown.

I saw him win his IBO title against Willy Wise and his first defence v Bielski. Used to work with his cousin, both really nice lads. He had a decent following at the time, shame he never got the money he deserved, would be a different story these days.

He's definitely not unknown, but I'd agree he is forgotten about to a large extent, especially considering how many times he was on Sky. Shame, I used to enjoy watching him.

To be fair, I only just found out about him. He has poor quality clips on youtube. Would loved a good highlight video on him. What do you think he could of achieved potentially?

Yes he was a good boxer but lucky to have got the belt and even luckier that we managed to matchmake his challengers well enough that he could defend it. He was the most casual fighter we ever had, I remember more than once ringside screaming at him to wake up. Lovely man, good boxer, but less dynamic and aggressive than Dylan from the magic roundabout.

I'll start with Murray Sutherland

Did Murray Sutherland see himself as British? he never fought in the UK, nor did he hold a BBB of C license.

Sure, he was British born, but then so was Barry Michael. Lester Ellis and Jimmy McClarin - but none of them boxed
under a British flag.

Lloyd Honeygan, Maurice Hope and Cornelius Boza Edwards were British world champions born in other places.
