Rooney's record is embarrassingly padded. Winning free-kicks against Estonia and penalties against San Marino. He was plain awful at the World Cup, missed so many massive chances. Kane has not only just shown goalscoring at the highest level, he's also shown exactly what he can do at international level. Rooney should be on the bench or not in the squad at all. His form for club and country for the last 2-3 seasons has been bang average. I'm just gutted that he'll be top scorer for England United for years to come. People won't remember how bad he's been also.
Kane's scored against Lithuania, San Marino, Switzerland and in a friendly against a German side that's been well below par since they won the World Cup, nothing wrong with that, but it's exactly what you're accusing Rooney, who has 22 goals in his last 32 games for England, of doing.
how many of them Rooney goals are from open play?
No idea, not that it's of any relevance anyway, stick the ball in the net and it's a goal, how it gets there doesn't matter.

Its impossible to say for sure as form can change between now and the tournament.

We have two strikers who have scored 40+ goals between them, if either of them miss out at the expense of Rooney I'd be very dissapointed.

Don't rate Henderson, I think Noble, Drinkwater or even Carrick should be in the squad ahead of him.

If Shaw is fit he should be a shoe in for a spot, when fit he is a class above every other left back in the country.

Hart, Sterling and Wiltshire are all good enough but may not be fit in time.

Sturbridge and Wellbeck can run defences raged, but what are the chances they can remain injury free for the rest of the season?

James Beattie, Andy Johnson and Kevin Phillips all scored 20+ goals in a league season, Andy Cole and Robbie Fowler banged them in for years, all five of them couldn't do it at international level. Proven quality over whoever happens to be in form every time for me.
When's Rooney proven it? In qualifiers and friendless, look at his record against the big teams and in major tournaments, he's just a flat track bully.
Only Alan Shearer has scored more goals in tournaments for England than Rooney, he's level with Lineker in second place. Charlton, Lineker, Greaves and Owen all scored goals against some very average opposition, no one scores 40+ international goals solely against the top sides in the world, yet no one mentions it about them.
By my calculations, Lineker scored 10 World Cup goals, and Rooney scored 1. Might wanna brush up on your maths.

Then you can't count and there's more than one international tournament, thread title might be a bit of a clue.

E.g. Barkley is better than Henderson but does he fit into the system we want to play if Alli gets the nod at 10?

We need a balance of graft and craft which is why players like Welbeck and Henderson can be so useful (they're not all graft anyway, they've got a bit about them).

1.Hart

2.Clyne
5.Stones
6.Smalling
3.Rose/Bertrand

4.Dier
8.Henderson/Drinkwater

7.Vardy
10.Alli
11.Welbeck

9.Kane

Pace, energy, goals, a solid screen for the back 4 and good options to make something happen of the bench (Barkley, Sturridge, Lallana, Sterling).
That back 4 is terrifying, all well and good debating who should play upfront, but any decent side is going to rip our defence to shreds. Clyne's suspect defensively, Stones still makes too many daft mistakes, Smalling is absolutely shite and we're not exactly blessed at left back either.

If England want to win Euro 2016 they are better off not playing Rooney. I'd take him along but only play him if something happened to Kane.

Gary Lineker

1986 World Cup;

11-06-1986: 3 goals v Poland
18-06-1986: 2 goals v Paraguay
22-06-1986: 1 goal v Argentina

1990 World Cup;

11-06-1990: 1 goal v Republic of Ireland
01-07-1990: 2 goals v Cameroon
04-07-1990: 1 goal v West Germany

Total goals = 10

Wayne Rooney

Euro 2004;

17-06-2004: 2 goals v Switzerland
21-06-2004: 2 goals v Croatia

Euro 2012;

19-06-2012; 1 goal v Ukraine

2014 World Cup;

19-06-2014; 1 goal v Uruguay

Total goals = 6

I'm not picking on you, you're just wrong. Alan Shearer (9), Bobby Charlton (8), Michael Owen (6), all scored more or equal.

Counted games he scored in not goals :doh:

Charlton definitely only scored 5 though, I've checked that about 3 times so it's Lineker and Shearer that have scored more than him, with Owen level.

And if my memory serves me correctly, the goal against Ukraine was headed in on the line...
