John Lowey was the boxer I was thinking of, failed a medical here in 1991, think it was a possible cyst as the problem. He then tried to get his license back but failed. So went to America and made a comeback fighting and losing in title bouts against Kennedy McKinney and Eric Morales.

Not in this country but Jermain Taylor actually suffered a minor subdural haematoma against Arthur Abraham, was eventually relicensed to box on and won the IBF middleweight title.
After that things went tits up pretty seriously.

Possibly the end of his Brother Dan's career too,can't imagine him carrying on after this.

Luckily fighting on didn't seem to effect his mental health

i know his brother dan is a bricklayer so nick might have some experience in brickwork but yeah he does seem like a clued up person so god bless and good luck in what ever he choses to do

Joe Mesi suffered a brain bleed in his fight with Jirov, he wanted to continue with his career and was in search of a state that would give him a license (most had rightly banned him) He then suffered another brain bleed while moving some heavy furniture and sensibly he decided against returning to the ring. (NB: he didn't get whacked on the head, just the strain of lifting caused the injury to bleed again)

Once your brain/skull is damaged in ANY way, it's insanity to consider fighting again.

Joe Mesi, Czar Amonsot and Jermain Taylor all returned to the ring after brain bleeding. Interesting that none of them lost since suffering their brain injuries: Mesi is 7-0 since Jirov fight, Amonsot is 13-0-2 since Katsidis fight and Taylor is 5-0 since Abraham fight. Taylor is also the first boxer to win major world title after suffering serious brain injury.

come to think of it, i think i remember reading somewhere that at 18 before he turned pro he had a bricklaying apprenticeship himself

Didn't Taylor begin to behave impulsively and violently after his injury?

He pleaded guilty last year to 9 charges. Pretty mad stuff, firearms, threatening women and children etc. I think sentencing is in April. There were reports he could get as much as 50 years.

If I were looking at 50 years I'd jump off a bridge.

Hopefully we wont have to worry about whether he gets a license or not
because when he makes a full recovery, he realises it isn't worth the risk and does something else with his life.

I think that Oscar Larios had suffered one before he fought Manny.

61 fights at 23 years old thats going some to be fair and Ive never heard of him before.

Yeah he must love a scrap! I'd only heard of him because he was meant to fight my mate before he packed it in. He ended up fighting Kris Carslaw a couple years back too.

There's some evidence to suggest that repeated concussions cause not only brain injuries, but changes in brain function. There's been a lot of high profile cases in the U.S of American footballers who develop wild mood swings and violent outbursts.

Taylor certainly didn't seem like a violent thug earlier in his career. Though of course, I don't have an intimate knowledge of him.
