It's funny after Joshua won the Olympics (even though I really thought he maybe lost 2 fights), I thought he was the best prospect in the world. Especially after a few pro fights. I remember saying to my friend (a casual) that if I could buy stock in a fighter, it would be him.


But, whilst I think he has tremendous potential, I just can't stand the Press release / Hearn / Sky PPV / smoke and mirrors propaganda. Unfortunately I think it does work on the casual fan.... If all I read were mainstream papers (press releases) and watched some highlights I'd be fully on the train....

But to real fans, I find it insulting, disrespectful, not to mention thieving bull sh1t. To the extent that I actually want AJ to get chinned by Prince Charles.... I don't care if he's British, boxing is an individual sport so you can warm to person itself or the opposite. I just can't stand the blatant rip off, hype, PR massages, and North Korean style propaganda machine.... I don't like being treated like a fool...

I know boxing is a business, but as we grow older and get more nous and more cynical, these antics become distasteful.

Yeah I used to be a fan, even now I think he's a good prospect, but the insane hype and bullplop has really soured me. I consider myself a casual TBH, I've not been into boxing enough for long enough to call myself anything else, but I'm amazed how people swallow it up and say he'd beat everyone in the division (but Haye and Mike Tyson would maybe give a slight challenge ).

Don't think Mike Tyson would be much of a challenge TBH

Two of the worst behind the ropes since the terrible degale groves one years ago. I still hear Ed Drapers "it's Harrrrrrlesden versus Hammersmith" ringing in my ears.

Martin's was filled with out of date almost corny hip hop (MOP cold as Ice as he was taking an Ice bath anyone?) and Reggaereggae you are spot on with the AJ one. The laundrette scene? The post office? Scraping the barrel much?

Two novices battling it out for a paper title. The hype has run away with it on this one.

Not really, of course I will watch it, but lets see it for what it is. Charles Martin isn't a top 10 heavyweight just because he holds a title. They are both relative novices, that turned to boxing later in life. It just happens that Joshua is better in every department than the 'champ'. Got to call it as you see it. As a card, there are some decent matches like Selby Hunter that I'm more interested in.

I find any kind of marketing hugely irritating but why shouldn't Team AJ come up with the best angle they can to make the most money they can while they can.

Is he humble ? Probably not but humility is a characteristic not often found in highly successful, young, millionaire sportsmen.

Is he the vicious criminal tw@t alluded to by some on here. Probably not. Unless someone has access to the relevant court transcripts we're all just guessing.

Hearn comes across as a bit of a knob but it helps the wheels of his promotional nonsense run more smoothly if he ingratiates himself with everyone, Stormzy included.

Reggae,early contender for post of the year and im sure im not alone at being intrigued what happens next

I remember when Larry Holmes spoke about Mike Tyson he would say things like he would self-destruct etc. Tyson was so closely managed with Jim Jacobs that he had this fantastic image. He was the ultimate bad boy who had done good, ferocious in the ring, but (in the main) he was Mr charming with his squeeky lispy voice out of it.

This was before all the Robin Givens business where the mask started to fall. All we heard was the 4 am training runs, no trouble with the law and was the dictionary definition of how he turned his life around.

Larry Holmes though saw through the mask and made some bold claims, most of which wound up being true.

Occasionally, Tyson would let his mask slip during his early reign with comments such as his "nose quote", but until Jacobs' death was a PR dream.

I do see parallels with Joshua and Tyson, occasionally Joshua will let his mask slip - such as his comments on whether he respects Whyte - Brand Joshua said only 2 minutes before "respect to Whyte, he brought it too me" - then though he has asked about Whyte and does he now respect him - he just said "No" and even Ed Robinson was a bit taken aback by the response.

He's going to beat Martin and he will have a nice career, but I do think of what Larry Holmes said about Tyson when I think of Joshua. For me, the way he fights is a bit of a "bully" him in - when things don't quite go his own way he resorts to dirty tactics - and I wonder what will happen when things don't quite go according to plan.
