Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
Wait, the fight is this Saturday?!?
Jeez, big fights don't usually slip on me like that. I thought there was still a while to go.

Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
Agreed....one hell of alot of prime fighting time wasted hanging around in the hope of fighting Floyd.Agreed, it's quite bizarre as it is a massive fight for Khan & Canelo is a genuine world class operator, in spite of taking catchweight fights to new heights.
I think part of the problem is Khan's idleness: he's spent so long on the sidelines talking & not actually fighting that folk just can't be bothered with him anymore.
Had he kept busy & maybe fought & beaten the likes of Kell Brook, he might be a massive deal right now.
Still can't work out whether it was the Khan's being overly optimistic and reading far too much into a few chats or whether the Mayweathers ducked out of some more serious/meaningful negotiations at the last moment.
All credit to Amir for taking this one but it does strike me that they have boxed-themselves in after so much time on the sidelines and now just want a big fight....come what may.
Ward's trainer is a smart cookie and maybe Amir can pull a massive shock?

Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
In the guardian they're reporting the Khan will make $5m and canelo $9m.
That's just under £3.5m which while is good money it's not that great considering the risk he's taking. He would make more headlining big fights in this country

How much do you think he could make fighting brook?freddydoesdallas wrote:In the guardian they're reporting the Khan will make $5m and canelo $9m.

I don't know what he'd make fighting Brook in England but if (big if) he does manage to beat Canelo then his next fight will be worth $10m to him. Rematch or Mayweather or something else but he'd double his money at the very least.freddydoesdallas wrote:In the guardian they're reporting the Khan will make $5m and canelo $9m.

Whereas a winning a fight in Leeds or somewhere against Brook wouldn't do that.
The British boxing scene is hot at the moment but America is still where the real money is.

I'm still thinking Khan on points.
Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
Seemed to be a lot of excitement when it was announced but not a great deal this week. I think it's the time that puts people off, and the fact it's on BN. It'd be huge it was on at a reasonable time on Sky.

I think he could have made a case for getting £5m. Stadium and big numbers on ppv. Brook and matchroom should see it as a worthwhile risk to take the short end.afcmarshall wrote:How much do you think he could make fighting brook?freddydoesdallas wrote:In the guardian they're reporting the Khan will make $5m and canelo $9m.

Purely speculation on my part I admit

The really big money is there for the headline acts in the states but Khan is the b side over there. I think he would have made more fighting mainly over here and the odd fight over there. Now he doesn't have a solid fanbase either side of the pondTaansend wrote:I don't know what he'd make fighting Brook in England but if (big if) he does manage to beat Canelo then his next fight will be worth $10m to him. That last part is true but as I said in my post above IF he wins he's writing his own ticket. He's taken a risk but the rewards are greater than anything he'd get from a UK bout.freddydoesdallas wrote:The really big money is there for the headline acts in the states but Khan is the b side over there. Maybe, but we're the first to criticise when a boxer stays at home virtually all his career. Have to credit Khan with making the leap to the US early, and the gulf between his resume and Brook's is frankly embarrassing.freddydoesdallas wrote:The really big money is there for the headline acts in the states but Khan is the b side over there. It is Freddy and he gets my complete respect for that. He might not fight often enough but Khan does have some bollocks on him.

Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
I asked an amigo in Tijuana Mexico yesterday, how much interest there is down there for the Canelo-Khan bout.
He said he hasn't yet heard anyone talking about the fight, even in boxing-crazed Mexico.
Most Mexican fans view the match as many of us do---just a very brief pit stop for Canelo on the way to the Golovkin showdown. Hence, little interest in the fight as anything remotely competitive.
But as usual in Tijuana, my friend says that all the clubs and cantinas are hanging banners advertising the fight. No cover charge. Just buy a Tecate and you're in.
Odds at the Mexican sports book favor Canelo by a solid 5-1, pretty much the same as in Las Vegas. I suspect that by fight night, Mexican bettors will drive those odds closer to 8-1.
If you like Canelo by KO, you have to give -200 (Not bad considering the quality of Khan's chinny chin)
If you think Canelo will be taken the distance and win by decision (a slim possibility but who knows, Khan may ride his bicycle the entire night) then you get +400.
If you believe in miracles, Khan is straight out a +350 underdog. They'll give you +400 if all his running results in a stunning decision win, and a staggering +1800 if Khan convinces Canelo to take a dive and scores a "KO."

Plenty of Mexican-Americans, no?Taansend wrote:I haven't noticed "plenty of interest".freddydoesdallas wrote:Is there general American interest in the fight or is it Mexican American interest in Canelo? Casuals only have enough space in their lives for a loose handful of fighters. The ones fighting at 5am will struggle to get a look in. Plenty of interest in the US though.
Mexican-Americans will watch Canelo v anyone but no one else cares. They're more into the basketball at the moment.
Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
Shitloads. I've been to plenty of Boxing parties when I lived in California with my old Mexican American workmates. 20 to 30 people in a room, watching the PPV & having a great time.Sklar wrote:Plenty of Mexican-Americans, no?Taansend wrote:I haven't noticed "plenty of interest".freddydoesdallas wrote:

I've been enjoying the build up this week actually. Starting to get that 'big fight' feeling now. I'm definitely going to attempt to stay up for this. Make a nest on the couch and set a few alarms on my phone for certain times. I want to see this Frankie Gomez dude on the undercard too.
Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
Boxing News really got right behind the fight with the best part of 10 pages of content and a really great cover shot as well.
I do like what Khan is doing and think Matt Christie is bang on the money...a massive gamble from Amir after so much time wasted...but if it pays off he'll shock boxing and join the elite league.
Less encouraging was the view of the experts - including ex-Canelo victim Ryan Rhodes - who can only see Canelo being too powerful and also quick enough to get to Amir at some point.
We'll see....but I like the fight now and can't help admiring AK for a change.

Perhaps the weigh-in will spark people's interest.
The UK press and TV coverage has been dire. They had a quick photo of khan and Canelo on a speed boat near Big Ben , then that was it.
Khan probably thinks the UK is going nuts now like just before Hatton vs Mayweather... But it's tumble weed.

You're last point is a good one and is always something that Khan struggles to understand. He doesn't seem to appreciate the amount of time and effort Hatton put into generating his his fanbase. It wasn't just a bunch of folks being wowed by his boxing, it was like a liccle cult!G0mez wrote:Perhaps the weigh-in will spark people's interest.

Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
I don't really see it as a big fight to be honest, just one of those annoying matches where a smaller weaker fighter has to keep away from a bigger stronger one. Nothing Khan has done suggests he has a realistic chance here unless he really is planning to run like the clappers and nick rounds with 1-2 eye catchers. Cor how good for boxing would a result like that be.
Re: Canelo v Khan - Has it caught fire?
real boxing fans must be intrigued, i am looking forward to this , as i am big saul fan,but it is no fury v klitschko. or this face it carl froch fight, that mans fights got people excited in the last couple of years. to be honest i want kovalev v ward or stevenson is what i look forward to. so no to the general public dont think it has caught fight, the old man is a big fight fan, but doesn't see the late night fights, has not mentioned it, only a couple of mates who are boxing fans are talking about it
