Going back to Khan, it isn't the first time he has suggested this - just before Athens the GB selectors refused to send him to any qualifying tournaments as they thought that he was too young (not sure if he had any/many senior bouts at that time).
Despite being on the funding and training programme he threatened to qualify via Pakistan if GB did not send him to any qualifiers - in the end he went, qualified and was proved right.
I do think that being the only boxer to qualify, being so young, of Asian heritage and GB lack of boxing medals etc. all came together at the right time and he benefited massively from that - much more so than if he had won a medal boxing for Pakistan.
I agree that the Olympics changed when they let the pro's in but at least with tennis and basketball it is the same game.
Am boxing and pro boxing at this level isn't like for like. One thing is the best pro's won't go because they have better things to do and the top arms have perfected their game so that the pro's who do turn up won't get a look in.
Perhaps Eddie can have a say and turn the Olympics into prize fighter!

Why are you getting your knickers in a twist about it. The guy has already represented Britain and won a medal for them. As far as I am aware, Khan's family settled here, worked and paid taxes, their son then boxed for Britain and won a silver medal. How is Britain 'helping them out' given that they've contributed to the exchequer, or do you have some evidence of tax dodging or other nefarious activity? You think Khan, a british-born man of Pakistani heritage, doesn't give a toss about the country he was born in, grew up in, and represented at the Olympics? I think you're filled with hatred. You clearly struggle with many things, amongst them the idea of having dual identity, or even multiple identities. Being British doesn't mean you can't also have an affinity for another country where your parents are from.
Nice sweeping statements about immigrants there, you know them all intimately do you? It's baffling to me why you'd think that people who've spent the majority of their adult lives living in a country, wouldn't give a damn about the place, kind of counterintuitive wouldn't you say?
The reason this country is in such a bad way is nothing to do with immigrants, it's to do with the fact we have an economic system which supports the wealthy and redistributes money from the less well off to the better off.
When the banking crisis hit, the taxpayer had to bail them out, and we are now being penalised further with austerity, which is just a thinly veiled attempt to further enrich the rich. The divide between rich and poor is at it's highest level since Victorian times. Tax breaks for the rich, benefits being ripped away from the weak, the infirm and disabled, zero hours contracts for the benefit of employers, erosion of trade unions, everything geared towards enriching the haves at the expense of the have nots. Immigrants are just one more cog in the machine, and they'll be fed into it like everyone else, working for peanuts.
You might like to do some reading before you spout such gibberish. My own family were immigrants in the 1950's, and had to put up with this kind of wooly-thinking bollox.. People like you like to blame immigrants for their woes, because it's easier than self-reflection and self education about what's really going on out there. The world is a scary place, get over it.

This.

There's definitely a small contingent of boxing fans out there who secretly despise Khan for his ethnicity, and they are falling over themselves now to get the abuse in, because he dares to discuss the possibility of representing the country of his parents' birth at the sport he excels as. Barely disguised racism bubbles to the surface, because deep down, they hate the fact that he is a wealthy son of immigrants, who has made good. It throws their own pathetic little lives into stark relief, and their own failings.
I'm not a fan of Khan, I think he's a bit of a tool, but he has a perfect right to represent Pakistan at the Olympics if he so chooses. More power to his elbow.

I can see all sides really - again, it is just an opinion and not necessarily "racist" which is the new trendy word to shut down anybody who has a different opinion without the need to offer a reasoned argument.
Taking your example, if your family moved from Yorkshire (lets assume that Yorkshire doesn't have any social housing, education, healthcare, welfare state etc.) and went to live in Spain (where you are given all of this things without the requirement to make a financial contribution) then 20 years later your kids turn round and say "Spain is shite like, I am proper reet Yorkshire me" then you could understand if the locals didn't think that this was cricket.

It's highly unlikely that would happen though isn't it - kids who had grown up in Spain would be used to the lifestyle and culture there, and likely would have bugger all affinity with Yorkshire, aside from the attitude of their parents, and that isn't what is happening here anyway, Khan is not saying England is shite, he is toying with the idea of representing Pakistan - how on earth is that an insult or affront to this country? It quite simply isn't, unless you can't get your head around people having an affinity with the country of their parents birth.

Of course I understand, I was playing devils advocate as I said I can see the various sides to this (and the wider) debate.
My example was in reply to Mickey's comment, particularly "my kids would still be Yorkshire" - again, I can understand this comment however was offering another viewpoint.

Look at the type of love khan gets in the UK. The type of racist remarks he gets. Yh he has his faults but arnt boxers ment to believe they can beat anyone? He not done any dick moves that should be condemned or to receive the hate he does. He the only boxer here in the UK that used his charity to help feed people that where affected by the flooding in the uk. When he gets alot of love from his own country. Anyone would want to represent where they get respect. I dont agree that pro's should represent in the olympics but I can understand why he wants to. I dont get why it hurts people so much. He cant rep Britain again anyway. Everything he did was from his own effort. Gb didn't hand him millions for nothing. So much double standards and hypocrisy with these haters.

Excellent post. Something that never gets shared is that in the previous financial year (2015/16) immigrants paid more in taxes than they took in benefits... a lot more. Hail immigrants and thank you for contributing positively to our society

What’s the problem? The problem (and I’m responding to some probable throw-away remark, IF there even was one) is that, most people I would assume, would think you don’t represent one country at an Olympics and then change vests as it suits! Might as well have turned around in 2004 Final and said, right, cheers UK but tonight Matthew I’m boxing for Pakistan........or maybe Usain Bolt could run for Jamaica on Tuesday in the 100 then compete for Germany on Sunday in the 200. It leaves a sour taste frankly as it cheapens the whole idea of an Olympics.
By the way....Khan is on a massive media/ business/ personal tour of Pakistan - I only know as I liked his page two weeks ago and it’s showing several pics a day.......I’m assuming that every reporter that gets near him is going for some “popular story” and I’m sure his Pakistani-ness is a big topic....I’m happy for Pakistan and his thousands of fans there to get a piece of the excitement, the lad is dual-heritage after all.
Do you consider Lennox Lewis a 'British' world champion?

What trash, Team GB are not inviting pros, otherwise, Khan would have gone with them, next best thing, his Father's country, that's if he is allowed to fight for Pakistan, as his brother was refused to fight for Pakistan in the London Olympics, because he had represented GB in the juniors, so no done deal yet. If you think the EU vote is all about Immigrants then you need to get some education.
